S. Forest Products Laboratory, Madiso t Wisconsin. Some shipments of lumber reach the distributor in a thoroughly seasoned condition, other seashipments may be only partially soned or still in a green condition. Green lumber should not be used in the construction of a house. The owner should be sure that the dealer delivers properly seasoned stock. A simple means of keeping all lumber, awaiting use on a building-sitdry is to pile it solidly on three foundation timbers suitably spaced and cover it at least on the top and ends with a tough, moisture-retardin- g building paper. Unless the top, sides, and ends of the pile are protected during rainy weather, the boards should be separated by strips spaced about 4 feet along the length of the boards. In a house under construction, the relative humidity will usually be higher than it will be in an occupied house - because some moisture will evaporate from the new concrete, brickwork, plaster, and even from the wood used in the construction. The absorption of moisture by flooring from the air within the building, either before or after it is laid and the resulting swelling followed by shrinkage when the building is heated, is largely responsible for cracks in floors. Before any interior finish is delivered, the outside doors and windows should be in place, so that they may be kept closed at night and in this way hold the temperature of the interior as closely as possible to the higher temperature and lower humid- . ity that ordinarily prevails during the ctoy. Such protection may be enough during the dry summer months but during damp, cool weather some for heating the house should be provided, especially at night. During the plastering of a moderate sized house, about 1,000 gallons of water are used, all of which must be evaporated before it is ready for the interior finish. Paradichlorobenzene, widely used as a fumigant, has value in controlling clothes moths if used in sufficient quantity in . closets, trunks, and other containers which are closed tightly enough to prevent escape of the gaseous fumes given off when paradichlorobenzene is exposed to the air. It is a killer of clothes moths, their eggs and larvae, when used in tight containers .at proper dosage. One pound of paradichlorobenzene to 100 cubic feet of tightly closed space is recommended. A closet 8 feet high, 4 feet wide, and 3 feet deep contains 96 cubic feet. Sprays, to be effective, must be brought in contact with the moths or their larvae. Instructions should provide for cleaning all articles to be sprayed and for spraying thoroughly, paying particular attention to seams and folds. Unless the articles sprayed are to be stored immediately in directions moth tight containers, should recommend that the spray treatment be repeated at least once a month. ; 18&Sk r-- llh I -i The Detachment of the Eighth Signal Service Company at Fort Douglas, Utah has vacancies for two qualified radio operators. To assume the pose that we are above mistakes is absurd; better far admit, most frankly if we occupy a prominent position before the public, that we make mistakes, many of them, and we expect to go on making them so long as we live. This will dispose of any claim to infalibility, but it will place us on much frmer ground, and help men to realize that we are just as human as they. This, in itself, does not alenate men, but rather draws them to us. First to Admit Negroes The first college in the United States to admit negroes as students was Oberlin college, at Oberlin, Ohio. the evaporation of this moisture is sure to cause trouble later because of its being absorbed by the framework. Methods of seasoning lumber have made great advancement in the past few years and the importance of keeping building material dry before, during, and after its use, with better construction methods, will insure the joy, peace, and comfort so much de sired in the "home of the future." 4rr-ririi- CIVIL SERVICE EXAMINATIONS The United States Civil Service Commission has announced open competitive examinations as follows: Junior chemist, $2,000 a year.
