In addition to the inconvenience it would have caused cheep and cattle men, and lessen the efficiency of our national defense, the grounds upon which the county based its opposition, its abandonment would have meant a considerable loss to the county in taxes and would have effected every taxpayer in the county. Recently an application was made by a bus company for a permit to operate a bus in competition to this line. County Attorney Lewis Jones and the county commissioners displayed a spirit of fairness and consistency when they appeared before the Utilities commission and vigorously protested the granting of a license to the truck company, on the grounds that the railroad company, which pays approximately $222,000.00 in taxes each year, should be given a first consideration as against anyone who could not offer more efficient and economical transportation than the railroad.
