A tank was built in the floor and the most efficient type of refrigerating equipment installed: to keep both the air and salt wateij at low temperatures. To keep outf heat, particularly in the tropics walls, celling and floor were insw lated with a high efficient cy material developed for use hJ household electric refrigerators; Oddly enough, this material, de--j pended upon to keep the penguin cold and alive, was also used taf keep Admiral Byrd warm and alive in the hut he occupied during hisj solitary antarctic vigil last year! It was also used in all the boused at Little America. Whether the penguins must be kept permanently under refrigeration remains to be discovered. Other varieties live in the tropica; In fact, the vessel stopped at thi Qallapagos and picked up a coiled tion of the smaller penguins thai thrive there. Their greeting was necessarily chilly one for their room and bath aboard the vessel were specially refrigerated to keep them comfortably cold during the long voyage from Little America. The birds are Imperial penguins, nd are half as tall as a man. They are the first of the Antarctic breed ever brought back alive to the Dnited States. So cold are the temperatures in which they thrive that the snip's regular refrigerator room could not be depended upon o keep them healthfully chilly. Even in the cold of their special dir conditioned room with its salt rater swimming pool, more than half the birds died. Ironically, they were stricken with pneumonia, autopsies revealed, indicating that at least they were protected from the 25J Smoked Pound . ;v.;:. t .ivr.Sv quaneri win a . conrve HAMBURGER Sirloin Pound . visAl- Now is the time you'll want some fresh garden vegetables for every meal.
