In the long run we pay most for that which we try to get for nothing. Food Value of Alsike yield more hay than alsike. Chemical analysis shows that, so far as the composition of the hay is concerned, there is not much difference between red clover and alsike clover. The following gives the amount of digestible food in 100 pounds of hay: Red Clover Dry matter, 84.7; 7.38; carbohydrates, 38.15; fat, 1.81; fuel values (calories), 92,324. Alsike Clover Dry matter, 90.3; protein, 8.15; carbohydrates, 41.70; fat, 1.36; fuel values (calories) 98,460 From this it will be seen that in of alsike and red equal quantities clover hay the alsike contains more digestible protein and has a higher fuel value than the red clover hay. In tests of the feeding value of hays made by the Montana Agricultural Experiment station it was found that sheep fed on alsike clover made one pound of gain for 6.32 pounds of hay consumed, and those fed on red clover, one pound of gain for 6.43 pounds, while those fed on alfalfa made one pound for 6.58.pounds of hay consumed. While we do not contend that alsike makes a better hay than alfalfa, good alsike clover hay is certainly equal to the best and is better than most hays, and other crops of its kind. Then, too, the alsike clover being a smooth plant makes a cleaner, less dusty hay than red clover.
