Show BEAR RIVER VALLEY LEADER, THURSDAY. NOVEMBER 29, 1928 in the lower grades. Teachers realize the condition and as far as time and energy limits permit strive to remedy it. Their big problem is to find the most effective means of presentation. The present practice seems to point direct to the teaching of more phonics. Mary Ollerton of the Brigham Young university says, "Parents Elementary School WHY PHONICS? Nearly every school has children who are failing in their classes in the intermediate grades because they can not read. Apparently the proper foundation for reading was not laid Brass Beds and i$ 'rvmzmt rt Furniture MASTERS Repaired in f'Ajrrr flikY'lii.r f."--rrtl vt.aoatt, . Leave orders at THE LEADER, Phone 23, for a few days only. December have faith in its magic and demand it, and principals seem to see no other way to solve the difficulty." So we begin the task of drilling on dull initial sounds, on vowel sounds, on rules, on families and the like. The bright child grasps it readily and progresses rapidly in his reading work. But to the slower pupil it is just that much more to learn. It is a tool too difficult for him to use and its mystery is beyond him. Miss Ollerton says his difficulty seems to lie in the selection of method of word study. Approved methods of teaching sight words and the use of content clues will aid greatly. In conclusion then, phonics for the slow child is the "most abstract and fartherest removed thought he is after. It would be far better to spend time and energy on the reading of sentences and paragraphs and thus encourage each child to use any of the word clues that most satisfactorily meets the needs. This does not mean that phonics should be eliminated from the curriculum. It has its place as a mechanical device as a help in reading, to be mastered by the more efficient student to be taught when the child is ready for its use, but not before.
