Big digs and big hits were the siccess key to thoughout the tournament proving that defense wins games. "We've been preaching defense since day one," said Patrick Ryan, Wright-Patterso- n coach. "It was a great workout when we played this team on.the practice day, and we Joked we'd see them in the finals." was dominant t Wright-Patterso- n in the early goings of the match, jumping out to a 10--2 run. With long rallies, Robins continually tried to find some way to put the point away, but the great digging - Wright-Patterson- 's wouldability of Wright-Patterso- n n't let them. Seemingly every point came from the killer spikes of David Jokinen and Robins just couldn't get a break. Wright-Patterson- 's After the initial burst, Robins decided to cut its losses and concentrate on the second game, hoping to force the match to a third game tiebreaker. After a brief break in between games, Robins took the hardwood with a surprisingly light attitude, looking to play for fun and not for the championship. They have four Air Force players and we figured we'd give it our all," said Paul Spalding, Robins coach. "But in the second game, we thought we had nothing to lose Battling back, Wright-Patterso- n refused to just concede the game. The once-distathought of beat-in- g such a stacked team began to be realized and Robin's attitude went from "let's just go out and have fun," to "tbis is business," and both teams wanted Game 3. Going down early 6-- Robins battled back behind the support of spectators rooting for the underdogs. But 10-- 8 would be as close as Robins could get. A symbolic point at 12-- 9 would summarize the match as an awesome duel ensued. Players were diving on the floor left and right keeping the point alive until a monsterous hit by a 3, -- outside hitter Wright-Patterso- n . was dug and the ball went sailing into the rafters, winning the point for the new champions. "They're a scrappy team," said Ryan. "They played us a great three games."
