Y N. Y., 10017 Q. My wife and I were recently blessed with the birth of triplets two boys and a girl. My suddenly large family has made me realize that my last health insurance policy, purchased in 1968, is probably not sufficient. With medical care costs going up, I'm getting worried that I may not have enough insurance. What should I do? A. You are right to be concern ed. Medical care costs have more than doubled in the past decade and are still rising. It's certainly a good idea to think about the adequacy of your insurance, especially with the new additions to your family. So do review your current coverage. And while you're at it, keep these key questions in mind: Are all members of the fam- ily covered? What are the maximum benefit limits, both the amount and length of time? How do these benefits compare with the level of health care costs in your community? (Your insurance agent can help you with this one.) What waiting periods, exclusions and limits does the policy have? How much would you have to pay under the deductible and features of the policy? Do you have the contractual right to renew your health insurance coverage? What hospital and medical services are covered under your policy? Q. I recently purchased a "dis- ability income" expense insurance policy which will pay me a stated portion of income should I become disabled and unable to work. It seems like an excellent policy. Can you tell me how many people are protected by this type of policy in the U.S.? A. Last year in estimated 60 million working people had short term disability protection through insurance company, formal paid sick leaves and employee organi-2atio- n plans. In addition, 12 million had long term protection (for periods of more than two years up to age 65 or in some instances for life). |
