Friday, June 16, 1933 Breakers Ahead PROMPT RESPONSE OF FIRE DEPARTMENT SAVES AUTO AN EDITORIAL DISCUSSION OF THE FOREIGN DEBT At noon Friday last a roadster owned by Tom Williams caught fire on North Main street, thought to have been caused by backfiring of the motor, and was badly damaged. The fire department responded promptly and extinguished the blaze with chemical apparatus, preventing complete loss of the machine. President Roosevelt has been fortunate so far in his dealing with congress and has been successful in getting more power delegated to him from that august body than any other chief executive in the peace time history of the United States. There are indications however that breakers are ahead and that these will be encountered in discussing the international situation rather than in domestic affairs, if there is any change in our international policies. Just what form the opposition may take remains to be seen. If the re is to be a postponement of tbv illi"d war debt payments due In June, or a scaling down of war aebtp, it will not be accomplished without a great deal of airing of the situation in congress. And if the administration decides on a "consultation pact" as France and some of ther other powers would like to have it do, there will be plenty of fireworks in the senate. According to dispatches from the national capital many senators are already discussing privately in a decidedly hostile way any proposed shifts in our international policy. One prominent administration senator is quoted by the Universal News Service as stating that "only harmony will fly out of the window if the president asks to revise the debts." It is said that among others, Senator Hiram Johnson of California, who supported President Roosevelt in the last election is prepared to fight any move for revision and that he would be joined by other senators of both political parties. Senator Lewis of Illinois is one of the Democratic leaders said to be strongly opposed to debt revision. A move for a consultative pact in the interest of the French, in case they get in trouble in Europe again, will also be vigorously opposed in the senate by those who are opposed to Uncle Sam's meddling into the affairs of Europe. In this respect, Senator Robinson of Indiana is quoted as saying: "We will fight it out all summer, and all winter, if necessary before we will ever agree to debt revision or to any plan to pull French chest nuts out of the fire in Europe by consultative pact." the Taken all in all, the if it embarks on a new in ternational policy calculated to put us into world political affairs will run into greater opposition than it has encountered in its domestic troubles. The domestic issues were imminent and very acute and party lines have been submerged in an effort to handle them profitably. But international issues are something else again. Up to this time the president has shown no indications of departing from our time honored policy of avoiding entangling commitments abroad and it is to be hoped and expected that he will not so depart. And if he does not, he will avoid a great deal of political trouble in the future. AT BUY HOME Local Laundry increases ray Ten Per Cent The Troy Laundry and Dry Cleaning company of Helper has this week announced that its 13 employes will be given an immediate salary increase of 10 per cent as its part in the national movement to force a return of prosperity, according to L.
