Thomas, president of the University of Utah, should prove timely and interesting. The letter is ad-- v dressed to 1). C. Jensen, superintendent of education at Sandy, Utah, and Is self explanatory, it discrediting certain recent reports that high school students could enter the state university after an eight month school term. The letter: In replay to your communication of March 18, 1932, permit me to say that we will attempt to care for the good students who have had a shortened year but whom you may care to recommend to us in 1932 only; provided that they have good grades and are deficient not to exceed one unit of work, and with the distinct understanding that this deficiency shall be made tip before they enter the Junior year. The poor students, undoubtedly, you will want to have remain with you another year. The requirements of the university are 15 units of secular work. Some nine or ten of these units are prescribed, and under no circumstances can those units be reduced. Must Have Prescribed Units Students, if they are under 21, cannot enter the university on the 9 or 10 prescribed units. The electives are just as definitely required as the prescribed. A full fledged freshman must, therefore have his 15 units, and if he comes in with less this year it will be by special arrangement; he will not be matriculated, and will not be eligible to student ac- tivities until that requirement Is removed. The seven month year is not acceptable as a preparation for uniAs a matter of versity entrance. fact, it cannot even be considered except In the emergency that Jordan finds itself, and then only for this year. Now, In respect to the shortened year; no district outside ot Jordan has brought this forward this year, except Millard. In previous years we have had two or three applications, but they have involved only two or three weeks. When Mr. Morton spoke of a shortened term. It was in the light of our former experience of a two or three weeks shorter term, and the university does not mean by a shortened term, two or three months shorter. Must Maintain Standing Shortening the ordinary year quite a different problem from two or three weeks, and while the legislature can do anything it wants to with these public schools, yet it cannot do anything it wants to if the state university is to maintain its standing. That was clearly demonstrated In the state of Mississippi during the past two yeara, when thru the efforts of the governor a number of changes were made In the state institutions and every state institution In Mississippi was removed from the apby two months is proved list of American institut- Their faculty members were practically made outcasts in the academic world, and their students could not transfer to any other institution and take their credits. Finally the people of Mississippi decided that the price was too high, and the governor was compelled to turn back the control of the institutions to the administrative boards. Must Rearrange Study Courses It high schools are to shorteu the year to seven months or there abouts we will undoubtedly have to arrange tor a complete setup or entrance examinations, which will require four years of 36 weeks of careful preparation in order to pass them. Or the school districts that run a seven months course will have to make their junior high school course for four years and their senior high school course four years Or, if they run a straight high school course, it will ions. have to be increased to five years. It must be borne in mind that the completion of merely the required units will not gain admission into the university; there must be added a sufficient number of elective units to bring these credits up to 15 hours. From this you can readily see that the extra time will have to be added If the school year is shortened. As to certifying to ful credit when you are actually short sofne I can hardly feel eight weeks that serious minded men would suggest such a policy of dishonesty. Doctor Thomas closes his re- ... marks by explaining there are certain definite national requirements set up for a standard which must be lived up to in order to maintain Its standing, and give Its graduates a diploma that will be accepted elsewhere. ly o oo ; EVERY DAY IS I HELPER DAY BUT I JUNE 8 IS ; HELPER'S BEST J AND BIGGEST HELPER DAY |
