It happened during the war with the Barbary pirates. Decatur, at the head of his men, had overhauled and boarded a Trlpolitan ship, the captain of which had treacherously murdered Decntur'a brother after surrendering to the young American. In the desperate fighting which followed, Ste phen Decatur singled out this captain for his victim. Decatur lunged at him with a boarding pike. but the barbarian parried the blow caught the weapon and, wrenching it away, lunged at the American. Decatur had drawn his sword and as he parried the blow, his weapon Droue off short at the hilt. The Trlpolitan struck again and wound ed the American in the chest and arm and a moment later the two hand-to-han- d were clasped in a struggle. At this moment another Trlpolitan came up from behind and raised his long curving Moslem blade to strike Decatur on the head. It was apparently all over with the American commander, fur there was none of his crew within reach except one man, a seaman named Reuben James. James had been In the thick of the fight ond both his arms were disabled. But, when he saw the predicament of the oflieer, James did not hesitate for a moment. He leaped In and with his head caught the blow aimed at Decatur. Cut Decatur's troubles were far from being over. The two men, locked In each other's arms fell to the deck. Wrenching one arm free, the Trlpolitan drew a long, keen Democrats Win Control of the Lower House in Roosevelt Defeats Smith in "Popularity Contest." Next-Congres- s By EDWARD W. "I appreciate the constantly exof me by pressed Indorsement Mayor Cermak," said Senator Lewis, "but as to the political platform being only wet or dry, I have to say I am sure the mayor and myself recognize that In the present hour the American public is more concerned to know where many of its people will get something to eat before they consider what they shall have to drink. "Also, It Is more urgent at once to consider places of shelter for homeless families this winter than for places to enjoy a beverage. The prohibition question is one to go along with food, clothing and homes for the needy millions, and with aiding the returning prosperity that is now on the way to our nation. These are the concerns altogether of the national democracy." Which statement increases the esteem In which Senator Lewis Is held by those who recognize his sound Judgment in national matters.
