Show The Midv ale (Utah) Senti nel FRIDAY , APRIL 16, 1948 Page Nine ~~~v-~~~-v~~~v-~~~~~~~v-~~-v~~~v-~ THESE KIDS Of OURS! P. M. Mickels en Director of Pupil Personn el Jordan School District Retentio ns ~ Dear Mr Mickelse n: Will you please give me some help through your articles in the Midvale paper which I always read? My boy has just turned seven and is in the first grade. His teacher tells me he is not ready for the second grade, so she is going to retail1 him. This will mean two years in .the same grade. I thought schools didn't retain any child anymore . \Vhat can I do to force his teacher to promote him? Mrs JAM Dear Mrs J A M: Without an individu al study of your child we cannot very well advise you or help hinl, and I know of no way in which you can force his teacher to promote him. In my opinion this is as it should be. No one, not even his parent, is in as good a position to determin e whether the best interests of the child will • be served by promotio n or re- tention, than his teacher, who has had him in her care the past several months. No teacher will arbitrali ly retain a child because of bias or personal dislike or the wish to be contrary . Any retentio n is carefully weighte d by the teacher and her principa l, and expert help called in when it is deemed necessary to assist them in making a decision. If your teacher tells you that your child will likely be retaincd another year in the same grade, . you can rest. assured that accordm g to the evidence of the case, he will profit thereby, and f h . th a t h IS c ances o making a to his ent adjustm ul successf '11 b b e enefited by sch oo I work WI his repeatin g the grade. We suggest that you go into a huddle 'th th e b oy ' s t each er, and with WI an open mind weigh her reasons · for not promoti ng him. 'Schools do not retain nearly so many pupils as formerly when the only criteria for promotio n was the child's ability to reach certain scholast ic standard s. No attention was paid to his size, his age or emotion al and social developm ent. Therefo re retentio ns continue d all the way through school, and there were as many repeater s in the upper grades as • in the lower. Today we confine our retentio ns for the most part to the three lower grades where it is most likely to benefit the child and where no serious socia! mal-adju stments are likely to result in keeping him back. There should be no stigma attached to the child who is kept back in his grade. We should remember .the differenc e in the rate of maturat ion in children and that all six year olds are not by any means on the same level of readines s for school. That one child develops more slowly than another does not necessar ily mean that he is less intellige nt, but o~ly that he is differen t. To permiL hrm to g·o on to more difficult work before he is ready 1 f 1· h t · but cruel, and IS no on y oo 1s would jeopardi ze his entire school · t · l'f It 1s easy o acqmre the ha1 e. bit of failure when day by day one finds himself unable to do t f h is classma tes I t th e res o w 1a can do. Far better to let him stay another year in a situation where he can succeed, and then go on t? further success, than to pu_sh h1m forward to inevitab le failure later on. In the lower grades a child quickly adjusts to h~s new classmat es, and they to h1m. In fact after one month in the first grade next year he will have forgotte n ever having been with ~hi.s ~ear's first graders. Your childs mterests are paramount. We must not let foolish pride interfere with those interests. We have seen numerou s examples in the high school of maladjusted students who come to us unprepa red. Quite often had they been retained in the lower grades .1ey would have been helped. We must be careful however , that we do not make the retained chi!~ feel hinlself a failure. He is retamed not to punish him for failure, but to help him acquire success. ~~~~~~~·---------------- NEWS VIEWS I I I ~eaJe- 'i<fJ«Hd An Indiana woman's husband We don't know how well prepared Soviet Russia Is for war and her money left home togetbut she certainly knows how t~ her.
