The health of the flock continues to be very good, and on))• about 20 per cent of the hens had -topped laying and started to molt as the month closed. Four hens died during September. The pro<luction for the month was very good with a total or 3975, or an average of 16.6 eggs for each hen. 'Dhere has been considerable shift.ing of positions in the first ten pem this month but no names appear in this group that were not there in the gust Report. H. C. Sorenson's pen mQvcd into first place with a record of 2313 eggs, and for the first time since the · contest started Gardner's pen is not in the lead. There will likely be considerable more shifting in this group during October. It would be very difficult to predict at thi~ time which pen will win the contest. Every pen in the contest is making a record that the owner can be proud of. , Eighteen (or 75 per cent) of the twenty-four entries have passed the 2000-egg mark. For individual honors the race is ve1·y close, and the chances are very good for three or four of the hens The Ea t and ~outh have ba~ic enson's hen No. 74 continues in the industries which corre. pond to tho. e lead with a record of 288 eggs. This first is that great quantities o.f high quality feed can be made as beet-top silage and the second is that heavy waste::; during beet harvest may be avoided without great expenditure of labor or time The way in which to build a beet silo and the method of handling the ! tops is described in sufl'icient detail I to enable a farmer to make one. Em-: phasis is placed on the great savings that come from topping beets at once after digging, from putting them in piles, and from covering the · piles when they are left in the field for one or several days after digging.
