CLAUDE NEON LIGHTS 'l'hH success or failure of the poul· try industry depends upon the care and feeding of the pullets during the growing age, according to Prot R. S. Dearstyne, bead of the poultry department at Norlb CnroUnn State college. "Cockerels and pullets should be separated as early as possible," says Mr. Dearstyne. "This eliminates crowding, which tends to retard development tn the young birds, which meaus a small hen with a correspondingly low egg production." The feeding problem, while often neglected, is of major importance, states Mr. Dearstyne. It ls a mistake to carry tl1e young puJiets through ttle developing period on chick mash. as such feeding tends to bring about an early lay and a molt wben eggs are at a premium. The higb protein feeds should be decreased when the blrds are ten weeks old so as to bring them Into lay about the first of October, be says. When the birds are fourteen weeks old, a grain ration should be kept before them at all times and Mr. Dear· styne recommends tbnt two-tblrds grain and one-third mnsb be fed until the birds go into the laying bouse. The consumption of grain may be regulated by keeping grain In the hoppers ali the time and by !eeding mash sev· eral times a day for Umited periods. Here each year a huge altar ts erected and a union service held that Is attended by upward of 40,000 perzons. Not many years ago a huge rock altar and a great white cross were erected on the topmost tip ot Mount Helix, not far from San Diego. In the heart of the resldentla' dls~ trlct ot San Francisco there rises a conical shaped hill that in the early days of the city v.•as called Lone mountaln. It bore this name until the death, some years ago, of Prot. George DaYidson, a noted geographer and scientist, when It was renamed Mount Davidson In bls honor. When the custom ot holding Easter sunrise serv~ lees spread to San Francisco, this low mountain was selected and on its crest a huge white electrlcalJy lighted cross was erected. The orlglnnl cross stood for several years until it was accidentally burned. The burned cross has since been replaced by an even larger one, whose whJte silhouette is one ot the points of interest about the ctty. Standing as It does on Its bill nnobscured by either trees or bulldlngs. It may be seen from many secllons of the city. It stands out In bold re11et against tbe intense blue of tbe sparkilng Call· tornla sky. Easter services also are held at Auburn, ln northern California. Here another huge cross bas been erected on A eolia heights, overloo1dng the can.: yon of the American river, one ot the great gorges of the Sierra foothills. Many thousands come to these servtces from all the surrounding country. For some years services have been held In Bidwell park at Chico. Here there ts no h11ltop that may be crowned with a cross and ·hence the services are held In Bidwell park, just on the outskirts of the city. One of the impressive services In northern California Is held near Marysville, when the devout Journey toward the Sutter buttes. where a cross has been erected In the pass near tbe South butte. A natural amphitheater Is provided here for the many who come for wiles to be present. Other services are held on Mount Lowe, at Ea.ster Rock, at Rodondo beach, at Pacific Palisades, at Santa Monica, at the huge white pylon surmounted by a cross at Glendale and at Eagle rock, all In Southern Call!orn1a. It Is estimated that the Easter sunrise services throughout tbe state are attended by approximately 300,000 per~ sons annually. The services tn the southern part of the state, naturally, have the largest attendance, for there 1t has been an annual event much longer than .In the nort11ern section. Also, more such services are held there than tn t11e north. 1 Many ot those from nearby who at1 tend these services begin to come as early as midnight. Many who come from a distance are on tbe road the day and evening before. Ronds lead~ lng to the top of these "Mounts of the Cross" are usua1ly crowded with machines and with pedestrlans durlng most of the night betore Easter morn- I lng. Motorists uSllalJy leave tbelr care parked at the toot ot the mount. From there they join those who make the r• mninder ot the journey on toot. While the services vary In some degree at each ot the places where they are held, the generally accepted program begins with a chorus ol trumpeters exactly at sunrise. Thll 11 usualiy !oliowed by a hymn In which the huge congregation ot the devout join. Then comes a variety o! oacred orchestral aele~Uons, followed by a J;llen t prayer and a prayer led by soma noted divine. Usually there also 11 an address by some orator ot note and a short sermon by a minister or priest selected tor the occasion. The singing o! selections by chll· • selectloDI dren and other orchestral usually closes the 1ervice. There 1s one old custom to whlch womenfolk cling, and, whether tbe7 can afford a new rig-out or not, moat of them contrive to wear some scrat o:r new finery on Easter day. It is not so foolish or meantngleSI as at first appears. Even before tha Institution of Easter ns the veatest festival of the Christian church, the Feast ot Eostre, goddess o:r spring, was held. The spring festival, when the whole world or nature become. reclothed, 1s a fitting season tor new frocks and trJlls, so good luck became associated with the Idea. In much the same way our "spring cleaning" harks back to early days, when housewives prepared tor thla great feast by cleaning out the caves, laying down fresh green branches, and beating out the dust trom the skins and !urs on which the tamlly bad slept during winter. Descent of "Holy Fire" Attraeta Greek Devout The holy fire ceremon1, conducted by the Greek Orthodox on the a:fte,... noon ot Good Friday, Is perhaps the most remarkable ot all the services held In the church o! the Holy Sepulcher at Jerusalem. Under the r&o tunda of tbe church the member& ot the consular, the mllltary and dJpiGmatlcal parties are seated. Eveq chapel and corridor, every space and corner is jammed with people, pressed closely together that one cannot budge 8 traction ot an Inch. The courtyard and the roots of tbe sur~ rounding houses, even the belfry, are black with people, all looking down upon one of the strangest sights 1n the world-the boiy fire-which Is believed to descend from heaven each year upon the tomb of Christ. be put on t'he case It transpired that the customer was Dr. E.
