' AfMC Wellness Support Center Most of us are aware of the importance a healthful diet plays in keeping ourselves fit and strong. Our oral health is no exception! The dental profession has long recognized the link between sound acids that can destroy the enamel of the tooth. The more often you eat and the longer foods are in your mouth, the more damage can occur. The foods we choose gen erally altect our over all health, including our teeth and gums. There is a growing concern about the record numsoft bers of sugar-fille- d drinks, sweetened fruit drinks, and snack foods that Americans are consuming these days. Eating patterns and food choices are important factors that may af- fect how quickly tooth decay may develop. The naturally-occurrin- g bacteria in the mouth thrive on the starches and sugars found in many foods. When teeth aren't cleaned after eating, harmful, sticky plaque will form. The bacteria in the plaque use the sugar and starch to produce diet. What can you do? Maintain a healthy diet. Eat a variety of healthful, nutritious food. Some of the best foods for healthy gums and teeth are those which contain vitamin C, and calcium. Citrus fruits, strawberries and kiwifruit are good sources of vitamin C.
