Show 8 Hilltop Times March 2. 2006 Renowned author speaks at Hill Prayer Breakfast BY BETH YOUNG Hilltop Times staff With deployments, frequent moving and other hardships, military life is not always consistent with family life. For this reason Dr. Stephen Covey chose Wednesday to speak to Team Hill members about how to strengthen their families at the 2006 National Prayer Breakfast Dr. Covey is the father of nine children, grandfather to 44 and the international bestselling author of "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Families." He said that he chose the topic "Strengthening Families," which is also the theme of this year's prayer breakfast, because of the unique challenges facing military families and that he believes that "strengthening families strikes at the root of almost all problems in society. "I'm very excited to be able to speak at Hill because of the tremendous contribu- think that military families face unique pressures and stresses, such as military expectations, "I family." There were more than 600 attendees at the sold out breakfast and each received a workbook based on Dr. Covey's book on families, with steps on how , to strengthen their Individual 0 f families. In his presentation, Dr. Covey touched on three key points - creating a family mission statement, learning to listen and putting God in the center of your life. "When you love God first, you will love your family more," he said. To prove the importance of creating a family mission statement with the involvement of every member, Dr. Covey had the audience close their eyes and point north. When eyes where opened, it proved that not everyone was pointing in the same direction. "Everyone is on a different page," he said. "The faltering is not the key. You may be off track most of the time, but keep going back to the . deployments, combat and separation," he said. Dr. Covey says that the family mission statement is a work in progress that should evolve and be developed over the years through regular family meetings. "Don't rush this progress; there must be emotional involvement," he said. "There are four needs of empowering people and organizations to live, to love, to learn, to leave a legacy. Remember these as you work on the mission statement. Your family is going to be permanent; make your mind up." (Lt. Col.) Terese Erickson, Chap. (Maj.) Carl Wright and Chap. (Maj.) Tom Gills. There were also readings from Muslim, Jewish and Christian holy texts, about the importance of family. Annual events are held throughout the United States and on military installations throughout the world. The events call leaders and followers to pray and to recognize the variety of religious experiences in American society.
