Tub smoke of the battle has about cleared away and the positions respectively occupied 07 the contending boats are visible with tolerable plainness. Indeed, it may as well be said that any change to come now will be merely ol detail, not of substance and not even remotely affecting the resale in chief, ao far as the Presidency itself is concerned. The, Ilepublicacs have ga'ned the day by a majority In the electoral college which, though not everwhelm-lis decisive, and sets all doubts at rest. It is as wil that it is 00, as toe coaotry'could hardly stand the strain of another prolonged andlexcitlng contest like that of Tilden and Hayes; we were on the verze of an armed conflict over that, and could scarcely hope to avoid sucl'a disaster no v,one such experiment in a century bting sufficient to exhaust the capacity for eaduriog it of any nation where methods prevail. It is a matter for national sratuiatl jh that the two gentlemen recently in opposition to each other as Presidential candidates have received the result a becomes their high stations in life and their conn ection with the body polliic, with diguity and decoruai. . Ic the case of General Harrison there was none of the bluster and mouthy exuberance characteristic of the ward politician. His department has been modest to a degree from the beginning of the campaign, and success did not change it. We blncoivly bop-- : tU it, hie incumbency of the chief executive cCl;e of the nation may be cliracterizd with a like regard for the proprieties and the time dignity of demeanor. From what has been written and spoken of him, as well a from his comparatively limited public record, we bare no reason to doubt that this will be the case, and that In addition he will bring to the great office a f air degree of executive ability. As to the defeated candidate, President Cleveland, little needs to be said. His record in tie various positions be has held, but particularly In tae present one, is before the public and the vast majority of the people are thoroughly familiar with it, but that it Is w.th feelings vastly at variance that It is contemplated is exemplified by the election itself, even if there were no other positive evidence of it. But we believe that even his political enemies, or a vast majority of them, will concede to him honestly of purpose and a disposition to . do right as God has given him to see the the right. Oa the other hand, his partisans, or most of them, can only see him as a pater patrice, regarding bis country as tin paramount considera tion and his party as secondary. That he has at times erred they will palliate by placing his mistakes alongside those of nis predecessors and showing that he holds a place far above the av crags. His reception of the disagree able news was strictly in keeping with his known personal characteristics with a philosophical and uncomplain ing compliance with the will of his countrymen, suggesting' at the same time his candid and nnfliaching belief in the rightfulness of his position and the utter absence ot regret because of the resalt which b$s followed his takr ' lag it. At this writing it is unknown whether ,th Republicans will control the entire government for a while or not. Tb. Senate will stand thirty-eigDemocrats, a gain of two, and thirty-eigRepublicans, a loss of one. The dif fere nee between the gain and loss re apectively and the remaining fact that the Senate will be a tie is explained by the circumstance that there is an inde pendent Biddlebergcr in the present Bnatetwho gives way tola Democrat Judge Barbour, of Virginia on the fourth ot March nexj. The Senate being tied will make it practically Republican body, as Mr. Morton will preside over it and have the casting vote. This leaves only the House of Representatives to be considered. It looks now as if this body might also be a tie, in which case dead-loc- k surpassing in duration that which culminated in the election of Nathanial P. Banks in 1850 would be the likely result, and it eqaarely a tie might defeat legislation altogether for two years, as neither party is in frame of mind to concede anything to the other nst now. However, while possible this is hardly probable ; but It Is certain that whichever party may predominate in that body, the majority will bs very slight. After this presentation nothing fur t&sr seems to be called for. Until the fourth of next March there will of course be no materia) change, except inrougn resignation or death, and these are not counted on. How soon after that the active and actual tran sition from Democratic to Republican a 1 thou a and men will take place can beat be told when It occurs. Meantime we can now resume our usual routine,' and give to politics no more time or space than it commands In like man- ner as other subject? . . u, . . H ht ht . Vice-Preside- nt B8.TOND THIS. Tax literature Issued by the Church of Jesus Corist of Latter-da- y Saints is aocompnsaing 11a mission among classes who would not deign to attend a meeting held by a "Mormon" mis slonary. There are many evidences of this fact apparent iq the .sayings, ser mons aad writings of leading divines of tartans denominations. A striking illustration of the truth of this assertion is contained In an article which recently appeared' in the Hew York Herald. A repre aeatauve of that paper propounded to a number of prominent ministers the question, What shall we do in heaven? and the answers elicited are . given as follows : "Dr. Armitage, a Baptist veteran a landmark In the nistorv of his denom ination seemed to think it will be time enouKh to know about heaven when we get there, and frankly admit-te- d that since no definite revelation has been made, we must be satisfied with the simple statement we snail find all the happiness' that we dreamed of. and a good deal more.have Dr. Hcndder followed In the same vein of Since we can't concive of aoaght. as nrselvea clothed upon with a spiritual body and freed from the temptations which this flestly tabernacle imposes, he ventared the assertion that our pleasures will be commensurate with our deserts and that souls will be of a ladder,! rom Saded, liketothetherungs lowest. Dr. Pax ton was willing to draw on his Imagination. He believed that we shall be fully occupied, that heaven is by no means a place for "eternal loafing," where we shall "do nothing bat sins and take things easf."' He added: "St. Paul may now be in the Milky Way working hard to soften the hearts of sinners of soother type," and "if God has a few outlying planets where there Is a little good to do, he will send as there." Dr.Tslmage felt certain that the finer tastes which circumstances nave repressed will there be gr&iifled. The man who is fond of mnslc; but who Is dxxjncd to carry coal for will -- : - - i furnished with celestial rapid transit, wiUbeUble - to visit Jupiter I before to after tea go breakfast; aay mercury, naving spent ine Mars. with a tew friends in Dr. Annltago remarked, it is "speculative," bnt since the scientific imagination has led to a great many practical discoveries, why is it not equally imagina profitable to use thenospiritual man- - can oy any tion At any rate, possibility help thinking about these things." Some of the above replies savor so strongly of the teachings of Parley T. Pratt's "Key to Theology," f and of "Mormon" literature generally upon the subject, as to create a strong sus picion that some of the reverend gen tlemen named have been reading the religious literature of a people In favor of whose faith they have not the courage to say a word openly. Few clergymen of the standing of Dr. Pax ton would care to express a belief that men, who have finished their work on this earth, might be sent, by Divine appointment, to o'her worlds, there to ;But it perform a good work. is gratifying to note that there one and is even prominent who has the popular minister courage to offer such a suggestion; for the idea is so true and so glorious that, when enunciated from a source which is regarded as respectable and popular, it Is pretty certain to spread rapidly. The wonderful vitality of the doctrines first Introduced to man; in this age through Joseph. Smith the Seer, and their potency in forcing their way into the minds of men, who hold in contempt the source from which they emanate, is one of the most remarka Die of existing evidences of their truth Like a lump of leaven in a measure of meal they are doing their work, which is to enlighten men, and fit them for a future state by better informing them ot the nature and possibilities of that future state.
