"We have much pleasure this evening In presenting to our subscribers the Des- kret Evening News in an enlarged form. "We have made It double its orig Inal site. For some time past the pres sure upon our columns lias been bo heavy that we have greatly felt the need of more space; but at the risk of endangering, in the minds of our patrons, the popularity and character of the paper for a short space, we deemed It better to de fer enlarging until the Sixth of This is a memorable day; it is April. the anniversary of the organization our Church. It Is a day fraught with pleasing memories, and we desired to avail ourself of It In issuing the News in Its new form, that to the very many re collections which already cluster around it, there might be, to our mind at least, another added. L The Dxseret Eveninq News is the cheapest daily paper published In this or any of the adjacent States or Territories But for. it to have this as its solo recom- meotUtion "would not .'satisfy us. "We wish it to occupy the foremost rank as a sound, reliable and interesting newspaperto be an increasing, power In the land, an authority on every subject upon which it may treat. The form in which the Eveninq News has appeared has nonsuited us but it was the best we could do when it was issued. The present form pleases iw better, but still we look forward to the time when, with the continued patron age and support of our friends, wo can make many additional improvements au Bausij our- own taste ana ;tne re quirements of the public better than at present. I It Is gratifying to bo able to say that the circulation of the Deseret Evening News is steadily increasing, and that, from every hand, we receive satisfactory assurances of the estimation in which it Is held. fVe scarcely dared to bono in the beginning, even in our most san guine moments, that its subscription list would have Increased to Its present size In the short time tho paper has been published. The enterprise was started at an unfavorable season for procuring substantial aid. Times were becoming stringent, means was difficult to obtain: and these obstacles in the way of success have not since lessened. Many do not take the paper,' who, , if circumstances were more favorable, would not bo with out it. The closeness of the times and the scarcity of money have mado our la bor a somewhat difficult one, yet we are surprised at the manner in which wo 'f - ' have been enabled to progress.' jV e are hopeful for the future. ; We feel assured that when our patrons see our determination ; to do them ample Justice in furnishing them a good, credi table paper, at alow price, they will ex ert themselves to !pay promptly, and in available means, their subscriptions, etc. This Is the only plan on which such a paper can bo sustained.
