PilJit. s Indianapolis News: We note, and we beg our citizens to note that the fundamental idea of the beautification of a street is that all of a street shall not be given up to vehicle traffic. In Springfield, Mass., they approach the problem "Streets are for the properly health and comfort of the people and for the beautification ot the city; the roadways for the horses are to be subordinate to that, dictated by the necessities of the case." With us it has been too much and too often: "Streets are for the horses and vehicles; the comfort and health of the people and beautification of the city is to be subordinate to them." See how Springfield treats her streets; how at the crossings she cuts out the center of the roadway an appreciable space, raises a curb around it and fills it with shrubbery, turf and trees! Read and reHect! Note, too, that Springfield has no fences. Neither has Detroit, nor St. Paul nor Minneapolis. It is impossible to make a beautiful city with a barrier of pickets, rails, boards or gas pipe the eye and chopping the lawns up into little shreds and patches. The time now is when there is a great awakening. Our people travel abroad. They see in down trodden and effete of the people is Europe how the comfort regarded as the first consideration and how the cities are ordered and cleaned and beautified to that end. We are a quick people to loam sometimes and in some things. The time is rapidly coming when the city that learns and first applies the lesson will lead the others in the race. 1! H. C. Illustrated American: A very big boast, that was, in fact, a verity, greatly amused a party of strangers not long ago, who were stopping over in Isew Orleans for a few days. It seems the were strolling through the visitors Southern town with a native, who took much pride in pointing out the numer ous objects oi interest ana telling ro mantic stories of lovely Creoles and laat gentlemen long dead and gone. On one of the old streets where stately res idences still stand although fashion has drifted away, a quaint house, eloquent of shabby aristocracy, attracted one of the party's attention. "No," said the guide; "I'm sorry but I can't say who lived there. Tell us, uncle" turning to a white headed, decrepit darky creeping by in the sunshine, "whose place is that?" "Uunno, chile," croaked the old man "dunno, and don' keer. I know do, whose 'twas. Hit blonged ter my fam'ly to' der wah, what was der, gran'est white people what the sun ever snon on. Our daughters never may and preswid nothin' 'cep' pres'-dentdents' sons. We is der uirangers, we is," and with a respectful lift of his tattered hat. the aged man hobbled away, Some one laughed at the senile vaunt- mgs of the but, after a mo ment's reflection, the native' said: "By George, that old fellow is right. Why, they we.e the radiantly beautiful Biranger sisters, and all he boasted of them is strangely true. The eldest was Jefferson Davis's first wife; the second married Gen. Dick Taylor, Zachary's son: while the third became Mrs. lhirst, and her husband, you know, was, infact a grandson of Thomas Jetierson. 75,109. DIKECTOES: well-know- n Latin-America- IR. Capital P (O.
