It is a cold day when the author of "The Hoosier Schoolmaster gets left. The first book entered under the new copyright law was "The Faith Doctor," by lid ward Eggletton, to whose efforts the law is so largely due. It was arranged that Dr. Eggleston's novel should be pissed first on the copyright records for July 1, 1891, as a mark of appreciation of the author's service in behalf of the law. "The Faith Doctor" is to be published by D. Appleton & Co. red-heade- d Sar-dou'- s Diamonds iu a Meteor. Washington correspondent: The geologists havo studied with a good deal of curiosity the specimens of star dust brought here from Arizona by Prof. Fotte. The Arizona man who had the claim to sell represented that he had found a vein of "native iron" two miles long and forty yards wide. Prof. Foote went out to see "the vein" for some capitalists, and found that a meteor had struck there. He fonnd a piece of 201 pounds, with holes through it in three That piece was brought to places. Washington for the scientints to look at. The professor also found another chunk weighing 154 pounds. At a distance of about two miles there were picked up 131 small pieces. These fragments constituted "the vein of native iron." Prof. Foote's theory is that a meteor of about COO pounds burst over the locality and scattered its fragments. But .the treretorio character of the specimen isn't what gives it its chief interest. The fragments were sent to Philadelphia to be cut into and examined. Chisels were ruined and it was only with difficulty that the cutting was done. Then an emergy wheel was applied to polish the surface and it went to pieces. Close inspection showed that inside tne meteor was studded with small black diamonds, worth nothing for shirt studs, but genuine diamonds to the scientist These diamonds which came from the stars cut into the glass. They are even harder than white diamonds, and, in fact, are the haruet form known. Besides containing those little diamonds, the meteoric mass is about 3 per cent, nickle. The composition is nearly that which the government is using under the name of nickel steel for the armor plates of the new warships. This is only the second time in geological history that diamonds have been found in a meteor. Several years ago a mass fell m Kusaia, Bnd the traces of diamond were found in it. Some granules were collected and treated with acid. They turned into small white diamond. Starving to Death.f Vienna, Aug. 28. There are 1J17 frm9 irrigated, out of a total of 3,24(5. The total area of land in these l.yjT farms is &jO,S., upon 22y,C7o acree. of which crops were raised by irrigation in the year 1SSJ. In addition there were 2kV'uO acres irrigated for grazing pur- poots. I he average Urst cjtt of a water right ia 83.C2 per acre, and average cot-- t of preparing soil for cultivation, includ ing the purchase price of land, fJ.lS per acre. Tha average "resent value of the irrigated land of the state, including buildings, etc., fc'il.W per acre, showing the apparent profit, less cost of buildings, of f 13.00 per acre. lhe average annual cost of water is?l.Uper acre, which deducted from the averaco annual value of the nroduct per acre, leaves an average annual return of ?i.81 ier acre. 1 he tendency through out the entire arid region, says the bulletin, to describe as irrigated all land to which water has been applied within any recent period; to which ditches, perhaps so far destitute of water, have been con structed, and even land for which water rights merely are claimed, has placed the ceufus office under the necessity of abso lutely restricting itself in its otlicial bulletin on irrigation to land on which crops were actually raised by the artificial application of water during the year of ISS'X Tbe farms or stock ranches in Wyoming, irrigated merely for grazing purposes, therefore have not been taken into account in this bulletin beyond tbe foregoing statement as to their approximate total area.
