It was a pleasure last year to note the wiwgy with which the streets and ere improved. It public thoroughfare ia aiih an apology and a blush me nieet the adverse oooi men ta now. There can be no possible excuse tor the we are harvesting, right in front of some of the finest pieces of property and crowding the arivea on V.oicat every avenue (save the mark!) in O'den. The ditches are greedy and claim more than a margin of our streets and carry with them impuritiea sufficient to 'flavor' the atmofcphere around them. If the sunflowers were only fragrant they might neutralize the odor and we would not complain. It would take no immense appropriation, nor need require any unusual ability, to put the best parts of the city in SEAT, HEALTHFUL CONDITION'. Mr. Driver, who lives on Twenty-fourt- h street, has grown weary in waiting, and has his sidewalk and ditch in beautiful condition. No doubt the same skilled laborer who has so neatly done this work could be employed to oversee the same further down, opposite the park, where the ditch, flowers, weeds and the driveway keep up such a rivalry. L'etween the" new Sister's convent and the park we tind a beautiful lawn and a wild wood, an asphaltum walk, and a muddy, 6andy unimproved country highway, verv high in some places, by the way, while the ditch which courses by the park is positively impure. It ia impossible to particularize. Even in front f the Keed hotel and down thot aide of Washington avenue, one longs for the much promised reform movements, which so far are only an irradescent no indoleeeent dream! Can this ponderous issue a mandate, body semi-weekl- that EVERY PROPERTY OWNER shall clean and improve bis own property, aa Mr. Driver and others do? If so in human pity let them do so! There will be an excursion in Ogden this week the A. O. U. W. expect a large attendance, and where, oh where can we flee, away from the shame and mortification which our city and it garb (or garbage) compels. Oh for the snow, "the beautiful snow," to cover the flowers and the weeds you know! Xaxtippe. The Xew Made Lake. Sax Diego, August 16. IL W. Tat-towho undertook exploration to determine the source of the overflow at Salton, has returned. He made the trip from Yuma by boat down the Colorado river. He says he is positive the lake will be permanent. The channel from river to lake is from a hundred feet to half a mile wide and of sufficient dept h to carry an immense dody of water. The water has deposited vast quantities of vualite seed and rich sandy loam in the desert and hundreds of thousands of acres on the borders of the lake are green with pasturage. Patton Bays the general effect of the overflow will be both detrimental and beneficial. While an immense amountof territory hitherto unproductive will become productive by means of irrigation from the lake, yet the moisture causes rain to fall just at harvest time, when they are not needed. THE CHLORO FORMER. 'f An Impecunious Physician is Charged With the Crime. Memphis, Tenn., Aug. 17. Detectives Saturday night arrested a man believed to have perpetrated the outrage upon Col. R. W. Fra6er I hursday last. He is Dr. James Edwin Clemens, a young phyrician, and has been partially identi tied by those who saw the robber as that individual, lie gives no satisractory ac count of his whereabouts on the day of the robbery, and his statement of his actions on that day are entirely at variance with the positive testimony of others on the subject. He formerly wore a full brown beard. People who knew him saw him Thursday evening between 7 and 8 o'clock, and his whiskers were black. Later the same evening he had his beard cut entirely off, wearing only a email mustache. He has been in financial straits for two weeks, and has been in hiding, pretending to be out of town, though he was known to have been in Memphis. From San Francisco. San Francisco, Aug. 17.
