The work we quote from is "A aeries of Pamphlets on the Doctrines of the Gospel by the late Elder Orson Pratt, one of the Twelve Apostles of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-da- y Saints." The quiet that followed told plainly that the five men aboard the launch had been killed. The search light of the Pensacola was brought into play, and the same instant orders were given to lower boats. The Condell was discovered only a short distance away. The Chilian cruiser had mistaken the launch for an insurgent boat and used a torpedo with deadly effect. There was intense excitement aboard both vessels for the next twenty minutes. Co!oo! o$eeeae fHave It Delivered at AX INFERNAL MACHINE. Attempt on the Life of Madame Carnot. Pabis, July 25. It became known today that an attempt had been made to assassinate the wife of the president of the French republic She received a package from Toulun which contained what appeared to be a Roman Cathoho mass book. Upon examination of this "present" the leaves were apparently stuck together with varnich or mucilage. This caused a still more careful examination to tie made and it wan found that the interior of the book had been cut away after the manner sometimes adopted by smugglers, and the book filled with a powerful fulminate) Pwder. No clue, according to the police, has been found as to who sent her the infernal machine, although the and police authorities of postoffice Toulon it is said, have been on the track of the perpetrators ot the outrage. No reason is known for this attempt uton he lift of of Mn e. Carnot. nd the conclusion arrived at is that the wouiu-uRfsasnin really intended to take the lif of the president, and supposed a pacaage to Mine. Carnot would be carelessly opened by the pr s dent, while a package to him himself might be carefully opened by an attendant, Of course, this is only a theory. The report of tha attempted assassination is the talk of Paris, and has caused considerable indignation. Some people link this alleged attempt upon the president's life with the defeat of the French government in the chamber of deputies, with the agitators, with tho passport regulations debate, and other similar matters. But it would not be surprising if the whole matter would turn out to be the work ot a dangeroun lunatic. Paris, July 25. The report which prevailed in this city today to the effect that an attempt had been made to assassinate Mine. Carnot, the wife of the president, by means of an infernal machine, was .utterly incorrect in that the attempt was not made on the life ot Mme. Carnot, but on the wife of M. Constans, minister of the interior. An analysis of the powder which was found in the hollowed part of the book received by Mme. Constans proves to be the fulminate of mercury, a highly explosive compound. Strang e IJoul-angi- Alsace-Lor-rnin- st e Tea Ships at Taeoma. Wash.. July 25. The over due tea ship Guy C.
