Iu tones feel who men of were those they are right. It felt it had a cause to defend the interests of the liepublic in Utah. Its position was that the statehood question can never be settled until it is settled right. And until it is settled right the Liberal party must 'oppose the danger of Mormon dominance and will never lay down its arms until an honorable peace comes with victory. The convention will complete its duties on Wednesday evening, and then it is ready for battle. And the conflict will not stop in this campaign until the Gun jjoes down on a grand Liberal victory on the fourth of August, and in the Territory not until the Flag of the Republic can float over Utah as an Ameri- TLe management takes .I - b lw pariy. can State, in whose politics the silenced. WAR OX "RELIGION." A newly oonverted Mormon organ in "country town declares that the mission ot the Lijberal part)) is to make war on s religion. This little trick was expect ed. It is the dodge of kicking up a dust to hide the real issue. The Liberal party is not in the theo logical business. It don't care what a Mormon, Methodist, Baptist or Theoso- phist believes as his religion. It con siders declarations of faith and formulations of creeds none of its business none whatever. Everybody of fairness knows this to be true. But when any church sets itself up as a political power, as the ruler of Utah, then it is the open and avowed enemy of the constitution of the United States, It stands as a formal menace to the genius ot free government. The Mormon ohurch has done that very thing, done it openly, avowedly, tyrannically, done it for generations. Against that kind of "religion" the Liberal party does now and ever will make war. It don't deny the charge. It is most emphatically opposed to that kind of theology. Any "religion" that Iiincoln and Grant and Gartield would condemn is not the right kind for the Liberal party. And those heroes had that no UBe for any sort of priest-crawould usurp the authority of the Repub lic. The Liberal party is not making war on any religion. It denies the pretense absolutely. But it does make war on any pretended "religion" that in practice, where it could and did do just what it wanted to, throttled the system of free public schools, which are the bul wark of liberty, the foundation of free government, and formidable to tyrants and conspirators against the welfare of the people only. The Liberal party is the defender of free education, of politics, not dictated by a hierarchy, of a government not opposed the constitution, of a social system that will not degrade the mothers and daughters of the nation tor to do that is inevitable degeneracy. And any concoction of a designing coterie whether it is,hypocritically labeled "religion" or the elixir of paradise, will find the Liberal party ready for war war inexorable, until the foundations of the republic are set invincibly upon a rock in Utah,Jand such "religions are known no more in this fair land. ft On Friday morning the Salt Lake Tribune hauled Mr. L. R. Rhodes of this city over the coals for saying in the Democratic county convention that "Any man who is too good to vote for ' dee-tro- y Thkrk will be a grand concert at the The opera house on Tuesday evening. people can be sure that it will be well worth seeing.
