A-- Rapport th wif of Chief Dispatcher Reppart of tL L'cioo Pacific rccbed Ofdwi Tceterday from the her ih bu beec on rkiL Mr. et - fU-p- MiUar of th Union Pacific, rcgiaierea a. u racmc Hotel. A. O. ia TbomM W, MidJleton, a railroad man of California, was in the city jeetarday, alao W. E. Crizer of Omaha. Tbera baa been much heary immigrant travel over the flip Grande. Other travel over thia line from pointa est of here baa been eametmng unuaually largo. The passenger from the wetrt-euto be of a more substantial claua than thoee which the east sends out here. Superintendent Bancroft of the Union Pacific is still in tbe south. General Manager Dodge of the Rio eetern has returned to Denver Grande from his trip to Utrh. The annual report of the Union Pacific in some particulars is upon a slightly different basis from last year but it particularly follows the same form and is complete in detail, like its predecessor. It is not unfavorable aa waa reported. Tbe deficit ia due to the large increase in tbe operating expenses and is in part accounted for by the fact that a larger amount of freight was moved at lower rates this year than the previous one. If the percentage of operating expenses to gross earnings had been the same in 139U as in l&W the system would have shown a surplus for thejyeur 012,479,740 after the payment of allchurges, instead of a deficit of 275,4:10. One of the rules of the Western Passenger Association provides that ticket agents shall not be permitted to sell tickets to any person on credit, but shall require cash down at the time of sale of every t icket. Chairman Finley baa recently submitted a ruling which is iu effect that the provision of the agreement referred to must le accented in accordance with the actual wording of the clause, and that there is no warrant for the extension of its application to such collaterals as the biiggnge and other chattels of a passenger. have lately assured Burlington heading citizens of Fort Collins that the road is to be extended this summer so as to give that town and Longmont and other northern Colorado places connection with Dead wood via Cheyenne and Alliance, Neb. The report that the Burlington is contemplating the purchase of the Deadwood Central railwav ia confirmed at its headvuarters in Omaha. The line is a narrow guage road running from Deadwood in a circuitous direction to Bald mountain, a point northwest of Deadwood. The pnrchase of this road by the Burlington means that the guage will be changed to a standard and from Fort Collins the line will surely be extended to Cheyenne. On Friday evening Mr. Younger's Gompany of fancy dancers of Salt Lake City came to Ogden in a special train whicjj was run here over tbe Kio Grande. It returned with the party again the Bame night after the performance at the Grand Opera house in this city. The fire which wiped out the town of Lyle, Minn., burned tbe two railroad depots at that place, one being the Milwaukee and the other the depot of the Kansas City line. Several days ago the Saint Ciry Times made public the fact that the Pacific Short Line was negotiating with the owners of tbe Northwestern bridge, with a view of using it to reach this side of the river and abandon the pontoon bridge. The negotiations in question are about completed, and in all probability the Short Line will begin running its trains over the Northwestern bridge on and after Monday next The Short Line will still use the Milwaukee depot, from which its trains will arrive and dearrangement will greatly part This help the new road, which has had many drawbacks by reason of the unreliability at offli-inl- ap-rte- ar s . a . hridcre. The longest sleeping oar run in the World is doubtless" that on the Canadian r, Pacific railway from Montreal to This is nearly 200 2,905 miles. miles longer than the lun from St. Lou s to the City of Mexico, which was mentioned in a recent issue as probably the longest and in regard to which an officer of the Canadian company kindly corrects us. If the Canadian Pacific were desirous of increasing this remarkable run it could easily extend it to 3,075 its car at tmlea by starting Quebec, or it could make the mileage still more extraordinary by adding 481 miles and commencing it at St. John, N. B. 385 miles over its own- - line from Vancouver. But it is hardly necessary to increase the continuous service of sleeping cars above the mileage already made on several of the long lines, although when the great ' International railway is completed it may be that passengers will be able to ride from well up toword the north pole down to the vicinity of Cape Horn without changing oars, Railway Age.
