Saw, the qution Is, ought thU m glftwl and cluqueDt lyunj Common jirraclwra, deTout and of tbe purest mo rality, to withdraw from the church, go out into the world aud se its doors close hiin, or shall be beVnuitted to ruain in and promulgate doctrine at variance to those of the founders of the denomination? Some such men hare answered the question for themselves aud withdrawn voluntarily. Others have had it answered for them and been requested by the gov erning authority to go out. Others still hang on the ragged edge, as it were, and endure dings and arrows from both the world and their brethren in church. Rev. David Swing, in Chicago, is a con ftpicuous example of one of these famous preachers outside the church. himself was uot recognised as orthodox hy the majority of his church connec tion. lieler Isewton is another, h man of thrilling eloquence in (he pnlpit and the highest life out of it, who is about to fellow be disciplined for ship with preachers of other denomina tions. His heretical opinions are the subject of much comment. The most interesting case recently is that of Rev. Dr. Charles A. Briggs, of the Presbyterian church, in New York He is a noble looking man, in the prime of life, learned, eloquent and full of the warm human sympathy which draws all hearts to him. Dr. Briggs is professor of Biblical theology in the Union Theo logical seminary. At various times he has in his lectures taken the view of the modern school of Biblical students in Europe that the Bible is a book to be btudied, criticised and investigated, just as human books are, and its contents, historic and otherwise, must stand or fall by this standard. For tbi and other utterances Dr. Briggs is charged with heresy, and is to be investigated by a The committee from his presbytery. Philadelphia presbytery some time since appealed to the general assembly to deal inU-rpirr- d rki- rwnm oretm Probata JuteMfc I him. There, too, is Rev. Howard MacQueary, in Ohio, suspended from the Episcopal church on the same charge of heresy. In England, if any denomination holds fast within the old lines it is the Wes- leyan Methodists of England, who are sometimes compared to the primitive Christians in their simple, unquestioning faith. Yet one of the most learned scholars in that connection, Professor Davidson, said openly at a meeting of preachers not long since that "the traditional view of inspiration is no longer tenable." Scholars contend that the faith in the plenary inspiration of the Scriptures is based on a mistranslation of a writing of Paul in his second epistle to Timothy. The translations of this passage as given in the common or King James version, and in the revised New Testament, are as follows: - KlS'OJAMKS VKKSION. All Scripture is given by inspiration of Hod, and is profitable (or doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness. eousness. ' , Jut A'juarbat-- tL Ktdwnt.
