Manufactured ice is as clear as crystal, and it gives the cake the appearance of having the picture painted upon it These blocks of ice will be left upon the paTementa, and people can use the ice if they want to. Aa ChaaleU Faahtoa. Oocnmgoreron the Brooklyn Bridge can I saw aa aged gentleman wearing a coamfortahle gray shawl wrapped around Ms drooping shoulders. The sight was tbough it was quite common a i or more years ago. Turning to a well known dry goods aaaa who sat next to me I asked him, "Do you hare many calls for gentlemen's shawls nowr "Ko," he answered. "Our fins has not sold a gentleman's shawl in three yearn. We do not keep them in stock any longer. Scarcely anybody wears tbexa now." 1 subsequently asked several other dry goods men and gentlemen's furnishers tha same question, and from all I received the same answer. The custom of shawl wearing by aged gentlemen has become boost entirely obsolete. New York Continent Bav4 my Bkrlklaf m HI Haa4, Robert Cannon, a colored painter on the new belt lino depot was on a scaffold with a bucket of paint on the fourth floor, when the scaffold broke, precipitating him to the ground, nearly forty feet The fall rendered him unconscious for a moment, and a crowd of workmen gathered, expectiug to pick up the dead body. Cannon suddenly aroused, jumped to his feet and, rubbing his head, said he guessed he must have been asleep. He struck the ground on his head, making a deep indentation in the soil, but he was met injured beyond aratch on his face. Cannon asked for a lay off for the remainder of the day and then walked to Aw home. Kansas City Times. On. Skermaa'a Faaarml AmaitaMtt. At the funeral of Gen. Sheridan Senator Carlislo and Gen. Sherman walked arm in arm out of the ctmrch and waited oa the pavement in front for the procession to form. Senator Carlisle remarked, "I expect we will have to wait here some time." "I suppose so," replied Gen. Sher- man, and added, "I aa not going to have any of this nonsense at my funeral." "How do yon knowr responded Senator Carlisle; "you will be there, bnt helpless." Oen. Sherman ropued, "I have already anada all the arrangements for my funeral, and if they are not obeyed to the letter I will do some tall kicking, dead or not dead." Cor. Louisville Courier-Jo- urnal. r.r vtte delving at the coal seams as usual ons day. Soddrnly, without a mommt a warning, a drloge of water broke through from a shaft of an abandoned mine. What started it will never be known, probably. In vs minntes it susuar was tiwiTa TayT suite Uak TW laajaraaoaed Mia So more thnlling tale has been Vvd rsowetly than that U the funr no res cued from the cual cdna at JeaoerriHe, feet below tha Pa. Away down surface of tha earth, LbresvquArten of a mSm from tbe entrant shaft miners feet det-- in the tower portions of the mine, though miners Dearest tha shaft eccaped. When the roll came to be called eighteen were missing. Bach as were not drowned by the of flood would naturally seek refuge in the higher passageways leading off from the level Tbe mine was honeycombed with these, fur it had been worked nearly fifty years. The water had tiled tbe main shaft to a third of it depth. Bat there was one thing it could not da When it niahed in a mighty torrent into the mine it drove the air before it up tbe narrow passageways and packed it into the ends of these. Tha water could not go throagh tbe air: It could drive it over upon iUrlf and compress it bat the more the sir was compressed the mora it masted the water, till at last the air kept the water out of tbe farther end of the paekagewsys as effectually aa if it had been a wall of brick and mortar. That saved tbe lives of the four who were rescued. It gave them air of a pressure of four atmospheres to breathe, but it saved them. Great engines, pumping 2,000 gallons a minute, were pat to work, snd the pumps throbbed day and night The mine must be cleared and the bodies of those who bad been drowned brought out and buried. Half a month went on, and the pumps only then ceased to throb. The water was low enough to search for the bodies. Several were found. In one spot it was plain that a fire bad been kindled, and that had caused the death of four men who had clustered around it The flames had consumed the oxygen. in tha confined air of the "pocket" in which they were inclosed, and the men were slowly asphyxiated to their death. The search went on until the bodies of all but four had been found. The rescuers themselves braved death a hundred timet a day from suffocation in the close air, but tha work did not stop a the moment Tha fall dangers and difficulties of that dread search cannot bo folly told. A line of pickets over the whole of a mile to tha entrance of the mine was kept constantly on the alert Once a minute, day and night, the signal passed from man to man, "AH right They will hear it in their dreams for months to come, those brave fellows. The nineteenth day came. At 8 o'clock in the evening the workers stood in front of "breast No. 5." Suddenly the face of one of them blanched and his eyes blazed. He spoke, and this is what he said, "I heard something!" Then throngh a passageway only three feet high they crawled, over jagged coal and slate, their clothes torn, their hands bleeding, and brought the four living men out of their prison. In .the first days of their imprisonment the four men had found a little food in their dinner pails. Then the strongest one of them killed rats, with which the mine was infested. They ate the legs of these rats, as epicures eat frogs' legs, and that kept the life in them. But at the same time it required all the feeble strength that was in them to keep the rats from eating them. At last only hope was left them, and they lived on that till rescue came. Tenderly as new born infants the four saved men were conveyed to a landing in the upward shaft They were too exhausted to be taken farther. At 2 o'clock in the morning the rescuing party ascended to the surface, black eued, begrimed and bleeding, themselves exhausted almost to the point of fainting. Their thoughts turned then to where all men's thoughts fly in times alike of great fear or great joy, to the dread unfathomable source of all that is, was or shall be. They stopped before the house of the senior member of the company, and there in the darkness, with all their sonls in their voices, sang "Praise God, from whom all blessings flow." three-quarte- rs r fr-- m Ml Lli OGDEX, UTAH. .
