Juc-- baa gamed a reputation for fast railway traveL A year ago last fall she had a similar experience in fulfilling aa engagement at Cheyenne. Her schedule time fur reaching that city waa C o clock in the evening and the curtain waa expected to rise at eight. Her train was delayed several hours by a wreck near lUwlina and she waa informed that the earlieat possible Lour ahe could reach Cheyenne would be ten o'clock. The plucky little diva waa equal to the occasion, however. "Give nie the best angina and engineer you hare at your service, with one Pullman and a car for my baggage," ahe said, "and if your crew isn't afraid IH ring the curtain on the Cheyenne opera house stage at the appointed time." The trip was probably the fastest ever made over the Rocky Mountains, tha train on easy grades, frequently reaching a speed of nearly seventy miles an hour. The car swayed so that its inmates were obliged to hold onto the seats to prevent being thrown into the aisles, ana many of the timid hearted chorus girls fainted rear. Juch, however, never from quaked. The train rolled into theChey enne depot at 7:45 and at 8:15 the audience in the opera house were listening to the sweet strains of her incomparable orchestra. y r j Two new and startling words are com ing across the ocean for the use of that Luge and imposing body of btw Yorkers to whom the word "English" is a talis man of invincible value. No man has ever been able to tell exactly how slang gets a start in London, bnt it ia certain that when it secures a good circulation in the small talk of the big English towns its appearance here within a short time is inevitable. Nearly two years ago everybody in London indulged in the expression m the movement" Then came "in it" Nowadays in New York there is no more scathing comment upon a man s general laiinre wan tne remark that he u "not in it This has been surpassed of late by the poetical simile that the nnTortnnate man is Uke the label on a bottle. As the label is not in it, the aspersion is severe. The two new words of the year in London are "spoor and "wide." To spoof a man means to trick him, to comment and put up a wicked trick on him, and to generally cavort with the more tender and trustworthy elements of lus nature, When yon say that a man u "wide in London a nosh of mingled pride and satisfaction overspreads his face. It is a great thing to be clever, smart, dow-neknowing and wideawake, but people who are all these things are as nothing compared to the man who is "wide." y, Newiorkbnn. Th Installment PUu. There ia something significant in the extraordinary growth of business houses run on the installment plan. They are not confined to Grand street and lower Broadway, bnt are to be found in imstreet posing buildinra on Twenty-thirand Fifth avenue, nnd their business is carried on in a fashion that indicates considerable financial skill. They sell goods at a profit which causes tho more conservative establishments a good deal of surprise. Their customers are invari ably women, and they sign what Is known as au "agreement," which binds them to pay a stipulated sum at intervals for anything that they purchase. The wording of the "agreement" is ingenious, but any one who is familiar with the law, and who examinee the papers carefully, finds that it is nothing more or less than a chattel mortgage, with a rate of interest that is usurious. But they are within the letter of the law, and that is apparently enough in in these days of keen "competition trade. New York World. ttf Evanstoii Men Satisfied. Evansto.n, March 3. Special to The Commekcuu) John Carreck, a local Union Pacific official, posted a notice at noon today to the effect that on and af ter this date the men would be given nine hours of five days during the week and ten hours on Saturdays. The men have only been working eight hours per day and five days per week for more than three months. This order is received with much satisfaction as many of them here have to economize to live on the proceeds of five days work a week and only eight hours a day. It is predicted that all of the discharged men will be given employment. Arrested for Bastardy. Evaxstos, Wyo., March 3.
