It is a pleasure to talk with him, there is something so lireexy about his manner. I was somewhat tired when 1 saw him, and the meeting had much the same effect on me that a fresh breese straight from the ocean would have on it sultry day. Not word waa waatucL Dr. Hale evidently bad no time to sit down and talk about himself, though he does have time to take Che kindliest interest in every one with whom he comes in contact lie has more patience to talk about his stories than about their author. Of hia little book, "In His Name." he said: "1 wrote it as a Cl'.rUtiaas story, to be told to the young people of my church on Christmas day. It was not nearly us long as in its present form, and its delivery occupied only about twenty minutes. Afterward 1 visited Lyons, where the scene of the story is laid, and went over the whole ground which the priest went over, only not by the same roads. It is a study of the spot on the fljwt" The book hits been translated into French, Italian and German. Dr. Ilalo said. "The French tonud it op a little because it wasn't orthodox enough to suit them." "My Double and How Uo Uudid Me," a very humorous sketch, was pnblishcd originally in The Atlantic, I Dr. Hale said that when it appeared a Boston paper declared that it waif "u very ini- Suguod at tho recollection, and it is no wonder, for that fact was evident, and needed not to be told. Indeed Dr. U:tle inclines to highly improbable stories, only some of them are so because the world is not ready for the reforms thoy outline. But probable or not, he sncceeds by some occult magic in making them wouderfully real to tho reader. "The Man Without a Country" was written during tho war, ": a contribution to the patriotic nwessitiee-othe It whs expected times," its author any to appear anonymously, but by some mistake the name was given. "The ediit was iNtnod," tor never read it says Dr. Hale, "to? at the tiua he was tramping in n southern Kttitn with a musket over his shoulder." The story has been translated into sever.il languages and has run throng! many editions. It was printed in German without the antiior s name, and was afterward reprinted in an American paper, also anonymously. A friend of Dr. Halo's says she found a German copy of it in a little country village on the Amazon. The story by its Urge sale did not a lit- -' tie to further the spread of patriotic feeling throughout the country. Edward Everett Hale was born in Boston, April 3, 1822, and has passed a large part of his life there. His father was Hon, Nathan Hala, who did a great deal of work when the first railroads in and laid out, the vicinity were sun-eye, and who had charge of important flnan- cial matters. The work done at this time was the only theological preparation he ever had, but after two years of it be was licensed to preach for a year, daring which he supplied various pulpits, remaining in Washington one whole winter and making many frienda Dr. Hale says now: "Any average duo-to- r of divinity would say that this was a very preposterous course of preparation for the modern pulpit, for the general drift of modern habit in America almoat compels young men of college training to follow itnpby three years mora of scholastic life at a theological school if thf.v mean to be preachers.
