Show DECEMBER 1, 1995 PAGE 6 Letters to the Editor Business Directory Introductory Special! Dear Editor and Commissioners: After attending the meeting I believe that we do need a new jail. We have got female inmates; And to have a jail that will hold and house the local prisoners and the it doesn't appear that there is room to expand the old jail, at the present location. We and most people that we talk to believe that a 35 bed jail would be adequate for our needs for quite a few years and then if needs be we could add on to this when it is needed. . But we and many other citizens are opposed to building a large jail to take m state prisoners. There are just too many problems involved that we don't need. We were told at the meeting that they would just have prisoners here that would have about a year left on their sentences. These prisoners will all be released in Beaver. A lot of them will when they are released. That probably stay here. Most of them will have no money both. or or steal cars, things means that many of them will try to will be a money maker. I and that it You think that the state will build this jail would rather pay a little more in taxes and not have the problems these prisoners will bed jail would cost an bring to our county. They told us in the meeting that a 26 additional $24.00 a year for a home that was assessed $100,000. We would much rather have a safer, better quality of life than to make money off the state. You cant have " ' both. This problem is of such a serious nature that we think you should let the this decisions and taking the power taxpayers decide this issue, rather than you making to decide this away from the citizens. We don't think it is fair that Circle 4 Farms should be given. tax or other business have advantages over the rest of us in this county. The beef and dairy cattle sell lot a of cattle for state. and in this Dairymen county always been a major industry dollar when consumers for beef the beef. These pigs are in direct competition against they are buying red meat, therefore, they shouldn't have advantages over the rest of us. You gave them a big advantage in letting them be able to buy tax free bonds. Please give these issues your most serious consideration and don't disregard the feelings of the taxpayers and voters of this county. It was stated that court is only held a couple of days a week. It seems to me that the present court rooms would be adequate. The judge and jury and others could use the down- - stairs bathrooms or ebe the prisoners could or there could be a room or 2 added onto the present court house if this would cost a lot less than building new court rooms. . 8 Dear Editor, Congratulations on all of the many improvements in the paper over the past the use of color photos. I know a number of weekly papers with much larger editions that still have no color on their pages. I particularly noted the recent pictures of the football teams, it was 70 years ago at the time), and some this fall that my father, Fred Cottrell (who was only of the local Milford men took some mule teams and Fresno scrapers and carved out the first football field. Dad had learned to play at Westminister College in SLC, and when he came to Milford to teach that year, he created the first football team. Not only had none of the boys played before, most of them had never seen a game! They had no uniforms; played in overalls with rags stuffed in the legs for padding. To have a team the picture taken, Dad got Westminister to ship their football togs down on the train, and Milford team posed on the U P. platform. The picture has been run in the paper a . 4BedrTa.. Tuesday.Wednesday-Thur.da- 435-331- 5 months-particul- Dear Editor, As the new State Coordinator for the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, I relocated my family from Michigan to the Salt Lake area. While searching for a rental to meet our immediate needs and a home to purchase for our permanent residence, I became acutely aware of the potential for crisis in the area of affordable housing. Home prices have continued on a sustained significant rise over a several year period. And, it is likely that the attention and subsequent economic development spawned by the coming (2002) Winter Olympics, will be cause for the trend to continue. Unfortunately, it appears that wages are not keeping pace with home prices. What this means is that the family with an average income can't come close to buying the average home! There are more reasons man the substantial growth and economic development of Utah, many In the name of protecting property values in our own communities, we of the causes are have ignored the fact flat we are making it nearly impossible for our children and grandchildren to own a home in our neighborhood. With each action that we take to ban apartments, increase lot sizes and demand fancy additions to newly constructed homes, we make it harder to own a home. There was a time when our children lived down die street and our cousins on the next block. Our next door neighbor was the local cop or a firefighter or a school teacher. And, these were communities that cared about each other and looked out for each other. No more! The cop and the teacher cannot afford the house next door and so they live in another community and commute to work. Is it any wonder that so many of what was once the backbone of our community seem to care so much less today. It's not their community anymore. Worst of all it's going to get much worse unless we start to do something about it Every home owner (and local official) should ask themselves this one question and ponder the honest answer . ..Will my children or grandchildren be able to afford a home in my neighborhood? The US Department of Housing and Urban Development, led by Secretary Henry Cisneros is attacking the problem on several fronts. First, the Department's programs are targeted to those not adequately served by private industry programs. An example of this would be the FHA home loan insurance program, where a family can purchase a home with less than five percent down payment. Next, the Department forms partnerships with private industry organizations at the national and local levels to effect changes witch will ultimately make housing more affordable for everyone. The National Home ownership Strategy for example partners HUD with homebuilders, lenders, realtors, agencies and many others in an effort to boost the rate of Home ownership to record levels by the year 2000. If we in Utah are going to adequately address this growing problem, Mayors, City managers, City Planners, etc. must begin to work with each other to find solutions to these problems. Government at all levels, city, county, state and federal must cooperate in suDoort of local efforts. Citizens must get involved to let their officials know mat they fee. affordable housing is an important issue. lnisproDiemwiu not get better on it sown. d. non-pro- Daily Prescription Delivery Order by 3 :00 P.M.
