CD CD By Norman Baxter : There were many drilling teams in this area. Each mining camp had their favorites. Contests were held on holidays and at a drop of a hat, competition was keen and it didn't take much to get up a betting pool. - There was a standard time for all contests and when that ended, the hole was cleaned and measured. The team with the deepest hole won the contest. One man wielding a single jack and using a short steel, would start the hole. Then the drilling team would take over and change the longer steel as needed. One man turned the steel and one man wielded the double-jacWhen they tired, two rested men would take over. This switch over was made without a change in the tempo and without missing a "lick." Much of the success of the team was due to the expertise of the Blacksmith. Each longer steel needed a smaller gauge than the previous one. The bit had to be sharpened to the correct angle and tempered to the correct hardness required for the type of stone being drilled. Too soft and it would wear out too soon. Too hard and it would chip. You may still find some of these granite stones around yet. There was a large one at the location of Gary Sullivan's cubed hay shed, but it's gone. One was midway between Milford and the Old Hickory Mine. Doug Denny, Mick Swain and some other men brought a beautiful specimen from Frisco, it can be seen a the park south of the Milford Library. It is fiat on top and has 10 to 15 holes drilled in it. A single jack was a short handled, double faced hammer of about 3 to 4 pounds. A double jack had a long handle, double faced and weighed about 14 pounds. y 3 "Pin a for Hot chili, home made pie A & F Enterprises Veda's Hong Kong Corner Drug Whitney Insurance j (J r Advanced Development Utah Power & Light Enjoy Wear coffee all day ..... w Vet. 9, 16, & 23 at 1:00 PM. 0Utfi& Se&twtup Pawknty Aot Station Motel Milford Drug Store Southern Utah Federal Credit Union Milford Valley Health Care Services Crisp's Bestway Kevin's Auto First Security Bank City of Milford John s Service Solutions Family Chiropractic Circle Four Farms Bonnie's Beauty Salon Sam's Furniture Milford Chevron Cal Energy Old Hickory Inn & or - D Achievement mm c , Pick up your tickets from these ting Merchants: e V Something For Everyone Start Your Holiday Right & Bright Methodist Church Fellowship Hall 4- And More!!!! ) 9. k.
