Mll By Norman Baxter Years ago, most folks in southwestern Utah, were familiar with the tale of how the large body of silver ore was located, northeast of St. George. That area was already famous for a stone, fine grained and with high silica content. It made excellent grind wheels and sharpening stones for the pioneers. As the tale goes, a prospector brought in to the assayer, an ore sample to be tested for its silver content. An old prospector standing near, made a comment that the sample probably contained less silver than the grind stone, nearby. After an argument bets were placed and both objects were tested. Unbelievably, the grindstone was found to have a very high content of silver. So, the mine later known as Silver Reef, was found. The high grade silver was smelted and poured into molds resulting in shining silver ingots. When a sufficient number were acquired, they were placed in a safe and transported by wagon, to the railhead at Milford. However one shipment never arrived at Milford. A thorough search was made but they never found a shred of evidence of what had happened. About 1946, there was quite a bit of excitement among the old timers in Milford. A town employee while grading in the alley back of Pete Martins garage, hooked onto what appeared to be an old safe. "Could this be the old Silver Reef safe?" The men gathered around as the safe was dug out and cleaned up. After close scrutiny and much discussion, they were disappointed to report that "this was not the long sought after safe." So! Treasure hunters; somewhere between St. George and Milford you may still find an old rusty safe, filled with silver Brent Stapley 51 757 N.
