Mr. Baxter) (Photo circa 191 Betty Nanis and Marjorie Sherwood recently spent a week in Tucson visiting Katie Willingham and her son Jim and his wife Kathy. Katie and her husband Lonnie, and their sons Robert and Jim lived in Milford for several years, and are probably remembered by many Milfordites. They left here in 1968 and moved to Visalia California. She later moved to Tocson after the death of Lonnie. Robert is still in California. Betty and Marjorie report that they had a wonderful time -mostly gossjping and helping Katie to catch up on all the news of old friends. They enjoyed touring the area, particularly a visit arranged by Jim, to the 2, described as "the largest life support system ever built" Katie and family wish to say "hello" to all their friends in Milford. She hopes to visit us some time in the near future. Dear Editor, Friends, Neighbors, and Follow Citizens County: I am writing to inform you how we and many other about the feel people ISO bed new prison proposed that the Sheriffs Department and County want to have built here. WE DO NOT WANT THIS PRISON HERE. We don't need it nor the problems that it will create. A friend of ours from Gunnison said that this was the worst thing that has happened to their area. He said one inmate stabbed another and there was a law suit and the County had to pick up the cost of this which was over $200,000.00 WE DON'T WANT TO HAVE OUR TAXES RAISED TO PAY FOR THESE KINDS OF THINGS. Then our friend said that many of the families of these prisoners moved to that area. The families are all on welfare and there is a lot air-tig- ht By Norman Baxter the Great C.C.C. During Depression, Camps (Civilian Conservation Corps) were set up at various locations, throughout the West. The camp at Milford was about on half mile southwest of town. The community got along well with the boys and I don't recall of any serious problems. Much trading and bartering was done, mainly in tobacco products. The boys could buy name brand cigarettes for SO cents a carton, lesser brands for 40 cents and Bull Durham was 5 cents. One Saturday night, dance night at the Aarion Hall, a young C.C. became too rowdy. Charley Baxter, Deputy Marshall, arrested him but the boy pulled a knife and stabbed him in the back of the head, then disappeared in the railroad yard. The wound was not serious and after the Doctor patched him up, he and another deputy found the boy and put him in jail. Shortly after that the fire siren began to sound over, and over and over again. 1 went to the dance hall to see what was going on. The proprietor, Al Kirk, handed me a sawed-opool stick and "The C.C.'s are going to take over the town and break their buddy out ofjail." When I arrived at the outskirts of town at 500 South, the Volunteer Fire Department was set up and waiting. There was a large group of armed residents (1 saw no firearms) and the area was well lit by auto headlights. The C.C. boys broke into their supply building and armed themselves with pick handles, axe handles and anything that could be used. When this large group of men found what was awaiting them, they stopped, talked it over then threw down their weapons and returned to camp. Residents retrieved the weapons and I doubt the local merchants sold any of these items, for months to come. ff Home and School: Vital Links Jared came home from first one grade day with a gym bag. Stuffed inside was a hug-siz- e bear. We were introduced. "His name's Sparkle and he picked me to go home with. He whispered in my teacher's ear and she said he wanted to go home with me!" Mrs. Hansen was his teacher then. Sparkle's instructions were to spend the whole evening doing whatever Jared did, and then we were to help him write a page in the special book he kept of his home visits. Jared never left his side. He put on Sparkle's scat belt when we went for a drive. He asked for a booster scat so he could sit up to the table. He put Sparkle where he could see the pictures of the we read before storybook bedtime. The next morning we wrote about our evening on the special page that would become a part of Sparkle's book. We remembered every detail of what had seemed a routine evening. But when we saw it through Sparkle's eyes, it seemed we had an especially adventurous time. It seems Sparkle had been quite scared to jump on the trampoline. He thought he was going to fall, but he felt safer when Jared told him he wouldn't let go. He liked the bike ride. He liked spaghetti. He liked Jared. He thought this was his best visit. Even better than when Amy took him to the movies. When I stupidly mentioned that Mrs. Hansen was very brave to buy what was obviously an expensive toy and take turns sending it home to her 30 children every night, Jared corrected me. "Sparkle doesn't belong to He's ours. And she Hansen. Mrs. doesn't make us take turns. He tells her who he wants to visit." 1 don't think Mrs. Hansen lost ever Sparkle to any of those How could anyone arms. loving lose a guest? When the prisoners get out many of them stay in the area and a lot of times this isnt a good situation. Another thing that greatly worries us is that there are always some of them escaping.
