By comparison, the bureau received a total of 1,055 inquires throughout 1994. "Work-at-bom- e opportunities are frequently advertised in the "help wanted1 section of newspapers and magazines," said Bill Beadle, BBB president. Promoters also use direct mail to promote their schemes, he said. "Atypical ad claims a person can earn work stuffing big money for part-tienvelopes or reading books," Beadle said. Direct Brochures of Phoenix recently mailed "applications for independent home employment "t to Utahns. The company's ad are needed to stuff and states home-maile- rs mail all kinds of brochures. "You will earn good money!!! Potential incomes range from $300 to $1,000 per week,', says a Direct Brochures flier. "You will be paid at the rate of $2 and even $3 per envelope." fee of The company asks for a "one-tim- e" SI 8 to $36. Direct Brochures has an unsatisfactory record with the Phoenix BBB. "If someone offers you a job, they pay you. If you pay them, you are buying information of usually something, questionable value,1" Beadle said. These kinds of ads may appeal to college students, retired people, the unemployed and persons confined to their home, he said. According to Beadle, the BBB has investigated hundreds of work-at-hoadvertisements. None of the opportunities have ever generated the income advertised and usually end up bilking respondents out of hard-earn- money. The BBB recommends consumers use caution when asked to spend money for registration fees, supplies or handling charges. Offers of huge incomes for part-tiwork which require little or no experience are warning signs of a possible scam.
