We have many exciting plans and ideas for the coming year. The educational theme for this year is "Hobbies". We've had the opportunity to learn some new things such as flower arranging, home decorating and more. We are beginning the year with new officers: Carol Wiseman, President - Lori Schow, Vice President Sandy Walker, Secretary - Sheri McDermott, Treasurer. We want to thank everyone who purchased tickets for the Hope Chest drawing. The drawing was held during Main Street Daze. Luceil Hardy was the winner, congratulations! Later in the summer we catered the luncheon for the Class Reunion. Our members worked very hard and were rewarded with a large turnout. Everyone seemed to be having a good time. The ESA provided refreshments for the recent Wall of Fame open house held in September. In addition to the refreshments we were happy to present a check for $200 to Milford High School toward the cost of the plaques. Everyone is encouraged to go to the High School and look at the wall honoring Milford graduates. Another donation from ESA was to the Milford Memorial Handbell Choir for the purchase of additional bells. The choir is sounding more beautiful than ever, and we look forward to hearing them perform throughout the year at various events. Our most recent project was the highway cleanup. Members met wearing orange highway vests and armed with garbage sacks spent an hour and a half picking up litter. Many full garbage bags later we had the roadway clean again. We would like to thank everyone for their efforts to help in keeping the litter to a minimum. -- Freshman Leads Beaver Reva Williams, a BHS Freshman, continued to lead the Beaver Thinclads in their meet in Salina Wednesday, October 1st with a strong First place finish among runners from Monticcllo, Manti, Juab, Enterprise, South Sevier, and Millard High Schools. SALT LAKE CITY: On October 22, General Colin L. Powell, Chairman of America's Promise -- The Alliance for Youth, will join Governor Michael 0. Leavitt in Salt Lake City, to kick off the Governor's Volunteer Summit, Utah's Promise. This major initiative, to continue through the year 2000, will challenge state and local communities to improve the lives of young people at risk in Utah. Utah's Promise is in response to General Powell's national call to action at the Presidents' Summit for in America's Future held last April 27-2Philadelphia, and is in partnership with the America's Promise - The Alliance for Youth. "There is a growing concern about public safety," the Governor told the Summit Steering Committee when announcing Powell's visit. "The State is passing tough new laws which demand high standards in our system. We are going to be building a lot of new facilities, hiring more law enforcement; there is a great deal to do for the safety of our community in state and local government. But there is another part of this. That is, if we expect to have a safe state, every one of us will have to be involved." General Powell and Governor Leavitt will address Utah via a video broadcast originating from West High School. Utah citizens will be invited to gather at one of the 104 public high schools throughout the state to view the broadcast and then make action plans to move their communities forward in unprecedented ways. Utah's Promise calls for Utahns in both the public and private sector to commit their time and resources necessary in order to lead successful lives. As the state's commitment to America's Promise and the five fundamental resources, Utah has committed to targeting the following goals: A caring adult in the life of Utah children. Utah will have 3,000 trained foster care families and an increased number of volunteers in new and children. existing mentoring programs for Make Utah a safer place have or be part of a crime prevention council. Give Utah's children a healthier start The number of low birth weight babies born in Utah will decrease by 10 percent. Give Utah youths more marketable skills. Twelve thousand youth who are at risk of becoming functionally e level. illiterate will be reading at the Provide opportunities for service. Seventy five percent of youth, ages 12 to 18, will volunteer a significant amount of time in service to others each month. third-grad- "Since the Presidents' Summit for America's Future, state and local communities have made tremendous contributions to help our nation's young people gain access to the fundamental resources needed in order to lead productive lives," said General Powell. "Governor Leavitt and the state of Utah are leading the way by challenging Utah's mayors, corporations, political leaders, religious institutions, civic organizations, nonprofits and individual Utahns to make their own contribution-th- eir own promise to America." Chairing Utah's Promise is Lt. Governor Olene S. Walker. "I think it is so important that Utahns remember that this effort is not about state government taking on even more responsibility for people's lives," said Walker. "The key to making this a success lies within the individuals of this great state. I hope we can make that message clear as we travel around the state. This isn't about more government funding, adding new government organizations or creating more government positions. This is about helping communities turn inward and draw upon the wealth of resources that may have been hidden in the past."
