Jioward Jones class of '30 traveled the Henry and Alice Schoo For Henry Schoo, class of '50, the 1997 reunion was not only a time to renew old friendships, it was a a time of realization of a dream a dream, dating back to 1947 when his father, Edward Schoo, found and began mining perlite ore in the mountains east of Milford. Schoo says all of the key ingredients have come together now, not the least of which is a viable market outside the valley. "It's important to have dreams, but that doesn't make them come true. It takes patience and work," Schoo said. Schoo retained an overriding royalty in the perlite mine when ownership transferred to Pearl Queen Perlite. "I have an interest to see that they succeed. I'm glad that it is moving ahead to provide jobs for people my friends and neighbors," he said. But it is more....much more In 1933, the Schoo family, Edward and Adrianna with 1 --year-old and Wilma, were in route to California in a '30s Henry version of a camper. They broke down at Indian Creek "down on old Highway 91." They were not only broke down....they were broke. Asa disabled veteran, Edward received a $25.00 per month pension. The family had to wait for the next check to buy parts for the camper. Edward got out his gold pan and stayed! He found quartz and gold outcroppings, shipping out about 5 tons of gold ore. In 1939, he bought the Old Hickory and began mining for mined for tungston during WWII, and reactivated the Hickory He copper. as a copper mine after the war. The end of the war was a negative change for mining. The Hickory was closed down in 1946. In 1947, Edward started the perlite mine. After graduating from Milford High, Henry attended the Montana School of Mines at Butte. He served his country in active duty in the Air Force, and then went to work for various mining projects west of the Mississippi. The old home town was a magnet.. ..and he always came back. By 1960 he was spending weekends and vacations helping his father with the perlite mine. They were crushing at the mine to prove up on the deposit, and shipping a small amount of crude ore. On February 5, 1966 Henry flew over the mine on his way to the airport. He saw that the equipment was running, but couldn't see his father. Hd landed the plane and went immediately to the mine to be greeted by the smell of burning flesh.. ..something he says will be with him always. His father had been caught in the machinery. "Mining is not always kind it can reach up and get you," he said. Adrianna, who died three years ago just six months short of her 100th birthday, still believed in the perlite mine. Alice, Henry's wife, supports and understands his drive for success in the perlite project. Henry was a widower when they met eight years ago, his first wife, Claudia, having died several years before. Alice accompanied him to the mine, listened to his dream, and went away know "what he was about." They were married shortly after.. farthest from South Carolina to attend. Beulah V. 1 When Edward Schoo began mining perlite in the first pit, the process was drilling and blasting. The current pit is mined by ripping. Schoo estimates that this pit, part of which is on state land (260 per ton goes to Utah schools) and part on federal land, has enough product to supply the entire U. S. Market for 100 years. Even as the mining project begins, PQP is planning for and working toward reclamation of the land. Top soil will be replaced as perlite is removed. The hillside will be reshaped and planted with cedar and crested wheat. Carl Briscoe, a that "PQP treats like a planl superintendent" has been with Schoo since the '60s. He is working al both the pit and the plant. Gerald Wavering is senior engineer and operations manager. Danny Gatten is in charge of sales and customct service. Wundcrlich had considered having the social hour at her home, but opted for the park when confronted with the logistics of parking. She did however serve breakfast to 49 friends at her home on Friday morning.
