A LITTLE MILFORD HISTORY Frank Tribole: With this year being the 150th anniversary of "The Mormon Trail" and recent article by always interesting Norman Baxter about the Roosevelt Hot Springs," I thought perhaps some of your readers would be interested in former residents of Milford and how they were involved in each. My great grandfather Joseph Mc Carrell, along with his brother Jesse and wife Amanda Woods McCarrell started out from Kanesville Iowa, now known as Council Bluffs, in 1 852. Joseph was only 1 7 years of age and looked forward to this great adventure of crossing the Mormon Trail and seeing the desert, rivers and mountains. After a thousand miles they rode and drove their wagons into Salt Lake City. Their wagon train was directed to proceed to Provo where they would make their homes. Under the churches orders six families of the wagon train in 1858 built the first road up Provo Canyon. Joseph Mc Carrell had married and in 1 859 the year my grandmother Martha Jane as bom. There was Black Hawk Indian uprising and a fort was built for protection in Provo Canyon midway between Heber City and Provo where the pioneers were forced to live until the war was settled. The town of Midway is still there. Joseph and brother, Jessie and families lived and farmed there for many years and were able to help many missionaries as they spread the word of their church. My Grandmother, Joseph's daughter, Martha Jane married Charles Tribole who died at an early age. Later she married Tom Moore. She, husband Tom, brother Joseph McCarrell, Jr. and wife Annie moved to Milford in 1906. They bought a livery stable next door to Jefferson's small store on Main street. Martha Jane's oldest son, Joe Tribole, came to Milford at the age of 1 8 and enjoyed the rest of his life, over 70 years, there. He immediately went to work at the Livery Stable hauling ore to the "Red Warrior Mine" the Horn Silver Mine and hauled supplies to the Frisco area. At this time the livery stable rented horses and buggies to ride to "Roosevelt Hot Springs" which Norman Baxter previously described. My father, Joe Tribole and my mother Myrtle Cottrcll Tribole who had arrived in Milford in 1904 with her family would rent horses and ride to Roosevelt Hot Springs for a chicken dinner. A round trip of about 30 miles. Joe and Myrtle around that time decided to get married and did in 1914 spending their happy lives in Milford. The livery stable burned down in 1912. Martha Jane's brother, Joseph Mc Carrell Jr. passed away, as did her husband Tom, in Milford. She spent most of her remaining years working as a practical nurse in Milford helping deliver many of Milford's children. Some of you will remember her children, Joseph Tribole, George Moore and Wilson Moore, all Union Pacific employees, and a daughter Rachel Moore Horton. Seven of her grandchildren graduated from Milford High, Bill Tribole, Frank Tribole, Margaret Moore, Jean Moore, Arleen Moore, Morris Moore and Ralph Moore - Hazel Tribole and Douglas Moore attended Milford High School and Dorothy Horton moved to California. So the successful "Trek" over the Mormon Trail in 1 852 by Great Grandfather, Joseph Mc Carrell did add a little to Milford's history. By |
