LOGAN, UTAH by Dennis Hinkamp: Does divorce lead to divorce? Are children of divorced parents more likely to seek divorces later in life? The research findings regarding that issue arc mixed It is safe to say the lack of meaning and inadequate role modeling in a marriage is a greater contributor to future problems of children than the divorce itself says Glen 0. Jcnson. Extension family and human development specialist at Utah State University. "Some studies have concluded that there is a positive relationship between parental divorce and the probability of the children eventually getting a divorce. However, other studies indicate no such However, recent divorce positive relationship. literature is moving more in the direction of sav ing that the effects of divorce on children is greater than previously thought." To try to understand the question. "Do children of divorce have a greater risk of marital problems?" Jcnson says researchers studied attitudes and dating men and women. These patterns of college-age- d studies found that students who experienced the div orce of their parents during childhood had more liberal attitudes toward divorce. "Possibly it was the more liberal attitude towards divorce that increased the risk rather than the actual divorce. There were no differences found in the types of dating problems experienced bv div orced and children." He says other research supports a similar theme: children of divorce sec parents using divorce as a way to solv e marital conflict and. as a result, arc more prone to use the same method to resolve their own marital conflicts. A convincing argument regarding the transmission of risk for div orce centers on the lack of appropriate sex role modeling, trust and skills in making and maintaining relationships. Jcnson says. "The arguing, unresolved disagreements, possible v iolence, threats and overall unhappincss in a marriage usually doesn't provide positive marital role models, feelings of security or a feeling that marriage makes people happy. Also, the adversary divorce and post divorce process that couples often go through docs little to prov idc feelings of trust or Beaver County ON SESaUICEIVTEMML 1997 Halter - Katy Dotson Western Horsemanship - Amber Dalton Western Reining - Lettie Thompson Barrels - Alex Wright Poles - Alex wright Flag Race - Lettie Thompson - April Romine 1st 2nd All Around Lettie Thompson - Katy Dotson 3rd OM AVAILABLE SALT LAKK CITY -- A ground breaking multi-med- ia containing audio recordings, video clips, and print material about the incredible journey of the 19th Century Mormon Pioneers is now available to the general is. itself, a pioneering effort in The public. technology by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-da- y Saints and was originally produced by its Affairs lublk Department for the new s media, as part of the commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the arrival of the pioneers in the Cireat Salt Lake Valley.
