Show Semitr (tontrj fEtonitar JULY 3, 1997 PAGE 2 10 Ways Milford Benefits From The Airport The Naming of Mincrsville When President Brigham Young was told of the finding of lead in Southern Utah he instructed men to take and settle where there was w ater as near to the lead mine as possible. Early the next spring families began arriving, Isaac Grundy, Jesse N. Smiih and others came and located a settlement nearby. These families had all of their earthly possessions in their wagons and came to this little settlement. As they neared the mouth of the canyon and looked over the valley they first saw a creek winding a crooked course down the valley below. It was the month of May, a pleasant part of spring. Nature was awakening the cottonwoods and grass along the creek from a long cold winter. Gazing over the vast desert they saw continuous growth of sagebrush, grass and weeds. The valley is surrounded by mountains. At the mouth of the canyon northeast and across the south creek were yellow mountains and the black mountain with rolling foothills to the south. The foothills are now named Rabbit HilL Beases Canyon, Wide Mouth, Salt Peter and Twin Hills. Farther across a vast desert is a long range of blue mountains. As they looked to the north there is another range of mountains. It was explained to the pioneer women that in this range of mountains was found the lead mine that brought them here. The pioneers who came were brave and faithful. Their only thought was to do as instructed, to build a settlement near the mines they discovered. These faithful pioneers, true to their faith in God moved into this valley and began preparing shelters and homes for themselves. then-famili- j F- - . v -' '.. .ill . r?-- 0 EyreDalton Wedding July 5th of Mitchell Chad Dalton on Saturday, July 5, 1997. Life Flight: There is no faster or safer way to rush those in need of medical service to a hospital. "I know that many people are afraid to fly, but the truth is that the number of cars, trains, boats, ATV's, and other vehicle accidents number in the 100's every day. Plane accidents are rare," Tatia said. Also, helicopters are not as fast as airplanes. 2. Emergency Services: If there is ever a major disaster the airport will provide the quickest relief. 3. Firefighting: Airplanes and helicopters were used to fight fires in the mountains that were not accessible any other way. "The mountains we so love, as well as a few homes would have been burned a whole lot more if not for the airborne firefighters.. ..and the airport to keep them running," Tatia explained. 4. If you look up, you will see many aircraft flying over Milford. Seven VICTOR routes go over us ... every pilot knows where Milford is. The VOR (the white building on the flat) and the ASOS are a vital part of the United States Aeronautical Structure. Tatia added, "Because of this the federal government will never let it close, and will help keep the runway in good condition. 9. The Small Aircraft: Cedar City or Delta are out of the w ay for anyone flying east to west. Pilots, who need fuel to get from point A to point B, count on the Milford airport. There is also restricted airspace the planes must not enter. And.. .as some people put. .it is in "the middle of nowhere" and is a welcome sight. Tatia suspects that there would be more crashes if the airport didn't sell fuel- - "Delta rarely offers fuel. Beaver does not have fuel, and the mountains make landing difficult for some small aircraft when it is windy." 10. The Future: If there is a demand, the airport w ill accommodate cargo planes. "Imagine ordering a new air conditioner, or a part for farm equipment, and having it the same day," Tatia said. Medical supply, UPS full service, and a commuter service to Salt Lake are all possibilities she sees for the future. She concluded, "The airport helps YOU!"
