VII NO. 26 County Commission Appointment The Republican Central Committee will meet sometime w ithin the next week to select three names to submit to Beaver County Commissioners Ross Marshall and Chad Johnson. The commissioners will then choose one of the three as a replacement for Commissioner Gary Sullivan. Sullivan submitted his resignation for health reasons last month. Acceptance was tabled until the July meeting. There were at least five responses to an advertisement by the Republican Committee for interested individuals: Doug Garrett, Dennis Miller, Richard Jefferson, Gordon Roberts, and Dick Rollins. The committee may choose from the respondents, but they are not limited to do so. Garrett is new to the area. He is employ ed as comptroller of Milford Valley Healthcare Serv ices. His wife, Stacey, works as a private secretary for Rob Adams, Circle Four Farms general manager. resident of the area, has recently retired from Miller, a long-tim- e U. S. West. His wife, Margaret, is a teacher at Milford High School. Richard Jefferson, a lifetime resident of Milford, is also retired. He is a former county commissioner, having served two two-yeterms and two four-yeterms. He w as first elected in 1968 and took office in 1969. His wife, Linley, is a registered nurse at Milford Valley Hospital. Dick Rollins is a businessman and lifetime resident of Milford. His wife, Toni, works for Special Service District 5. Rollins also serves on the SSEW5 board. The four applicants above all reside in Milford, the home base of retiring Commissioner Sullivan. By gentleman's agreement.... not by law Beaver County government has always consisted of one commissioner from each of the three communities. Gordon Roberts, the remaining applicant who has been active in the Republican Party, resides in Beaver. In 1996 he ran for commissioner against Johnson on the Independent ticket, and was defeated. According to election statistics, if he had run as a Republican, the straight party vote would have given him a landslide victory. His wife is a homemaker, active in church and community projects. ar Fffc 'td)tkJh w (7e? to rrfJ: fcfrJ M rift i Dustin Whittaker - Boys 15 to 18; Dale Eckley - Men 's 49 - 54; Stacy Barnes holding Nathan -Women 's 19 - 24; Cheryl Ewart - Women 's 49 - 54; Candace Barton -- 12 to 14; Mary Wiseman (She absolutely refused to sprint the last 100 yards.) - Senior Women 's; Junior Davis - Senior Men 's; Jodi Young - 31 to 36 Women 's. At this point they have no funding to work with Milford. They are, however, willing to administer a survey to determine what community residents perceive their problems to be. They would first like to set up a work group to develop a survey of environmental concerns. Depending on community participation and the seriousness of the issues raised, the Division may be able to use the survey data to apply for a grant for further research. A letter will be mailed to residents in Milford and the surrounding area within a few days to determine the level of interest. The Division, idealisticalh, would like to work with Milford to help define and address its environmental health concerns, then use the Milford information to aid other communities. Mary Sower related that her health and safety concerns arc the danger related to having the railroad go through town and the high arsenic level in the drinking water. The possibility of air and water pollution from the hog farms w as not mentioned. If the hog industry does prove to be a concern to residents during the survey phase, and her team may be able to use that information to secure a research grant. Such funding and subsequent study would allow the Division to evaluate data from state agencies.
