Show I MAY leaner County iflonitor 22. 1997 ttT BHS PAGE 6 5. President x-- CELLULAROuP Slate Discus . Champion Trey Gent the BHS Student Body President culminated his high school athletic career on a positive note by winning the men's 2A State Discus championship for the second consecutive year with a 142'9" throw at the recently completed USAA Track and Field Championships held at BYL) in Provo. Utah. The BHS Senior was a favorite going into the State hcay Championship meet, but Millard High School's Lewis Whitaker had his own idea about who was going to win the 97 title. On his first throw, the 5th ranked thrower in the state popped a 14 1'6" effort, nearly 10' further than he had ev er thrown before in his life, put some legitimate pressure on Beaver's best hope of a state championship. Whitaker, a first team all state football selection from Fillmore, who has spent a lot of time in the weight room as his physique attests, seemed to have the psychological edge for an upset of major proportions until the lighter Beaver thrower finally relaxed on his next to last throw in the finals and edged the muscular eagle by 1' with a strong 142'9" effort of his own. IK Gent commented to his coach after the throwing that he definitely felt competition the pressure when his first four throws fell short of 142'. but that he did some sprinting between the prelims and the finals to relax, put a smile on his face and determination in his heart before his final throws and things worked themselves out the way they did last year when he w as fourth place going into the finals. He ended up the 1996 State winning on his last throw Championship over a North Summit athlete. rTAinu5 n ' "' BHS Men's Results - State Track 400 Meter Relay: Beaver 6th, D. Erickson, B. Albrecht, L.
