As anticipated. "435" has been designed as the new area code. In early February, the Utah industry submitted a plan endorsed by local regulators to geographically split the state into two areas. Under the plan, telephone exchanges in five counties Utah, Salt Lake, Davis, Weber and Morgan will retain the existing 80 1 area code. Exchanges in the state's other 24 counties will change to the new 435 area code. Use of the new area code won't be required until March 22, 1998. That date will be preceded by a six month phase-i- n period during which those placing calls to Utah phone users outside the area will be able to use either the old or the new area code. The phase-i- n period w ill begin September 21 of this y ear. The Utah telecommunications industry is currently making preparations to launch a customer notification and education campaign including bill inserts and other informative advertising. Utah needs to add a new area code because the increasing demand for new telephone numbers in the state is rapidly exhausting the local prefixes within the existing "80 1 " area. pool of available three-dig- it ayy-OfTic- ials - ' - five-coun- ty " . .fc ijf iv't Wanted MALES OF EVERV RACE.
