The way a suspect handles the hours following an arrest may, unfortunately, have more to do with whether he is sentenced to a long prison term than guilt or innocence. Hardened criminals, having been through the procedure many times, know the drill. Average citizens or very young and naive individuals, who have never had a brush with the law, expect to be released if they are not guilty. 'Tain't necessarily so! A terrified and confused suspect can actually be convicted on the strength of something he says in a state of confusion. County Attorney Leo Kanell says his work load is such that he has not had time to pursue a plea bargain to reduce the charge against the Eldredges from a felony to a Class A Misdemeanor. James Etdredge is a principal of Ranger Enterprises, purchaser of the immanoel Foundation property for approximately 10 on the dollar at a Beaver County tax sale. Further procrastination could be construed as a violation of Eldredges' constitutional right to a speedy trial, which would allow attorneys to call for dismissal. Beaver County could then avoid the embarrassment of possible involvement of an elected official in the incident.
