Hill AFB Woman Take Utah Link Honors at SLC Pert Beverly Nelson, Accounting Division clerk, was recently crowned Utah Women's golf champion after defeating Marge Fillis at Meadowbrook Golf course in Salt Lake City. Beverly took a week's annual leave from her job to enter the golf tourney. After battling her includway through ing a win over sharp Utah golfer semi-final- s, Mrs. Belle Fellows, Miss Nelson won the right to compete against the 1954 champion Mrs. Fillis. In the final championship play off, Mrs. Fillis started off by three putting the first two greens of match. At the end of the the first 18 it was Miss Nelson with two up. In the afternoon playoff, Mrs. Fillis evened things up after 23 holes by copping No. 2 and No. 5. Three holes later they were still even. On the short No. 13 hole, Mrs. Fillis missed a shot and took a double bogey five placing Beverly up one. Miss Nelson shot pars on No. 14 and 15 and went three up and three to play. Mrs. Fillis came back to win No. 16 with a par and then blew No. 17 by missing the putt by inches. Miss Nelson sank hers to win the match, Beverly started golfing as a hobby three years ago. Only professional coaching she has received was at the hands of capable Mick Riley, Meadowbrook pro, who gave her lessons all last summer. Miss Nelson, a veteran of four years at Hill, resides at 537 E. 21 S., Salt Lake City. One-tim- e big league pitcher Fred Sanford and former minor league pro Occie Evans came to nearby Hill Garden Homes and held a baseball clinic for the youngsters. Both men are attached to the Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office, Sanford as a deputy and Evans as a captain in charge of traffic. Sanford pitched for the St. Louis Browns from 1946 to 1948 and New York Yankees Evans is a veteran of minor leagues, having played 2nd base with the Western League in Oma ha, and Seattle and Oakland m the Pacific Coast League. The law officers now spend off- duty hours coaching youngsters in baseball and now and then helping with umpiring chores. At Hill, Sanford and Evans gave lessons in fielding, pitching, catching, and hitting to approximately 40 boys below teen age. Sanford also gave a special briefing on physical conditioning for the sport. Evans combined business with pleasure by instructing the lads on measures they could take to co operate with local law enforce ment agencies. Several of the boys were sworn in as honorary sheriff's deputies. Little League coach, TSgt Louis 11 Getlin of personnel services, put drills. the boys through baseball Coach Getlin has organized the group into "A" and "B" teams. Ssrt.
