Show 2 sMmsm Military Guard to Get New Quarters Wednesday June 16, 1943 r Bringing relief to the military guards, plans have been launched for the construction of a building to toe used for guard quarters, the Engineering section announced yesterday. The new guard house, to be 20 feet wide and 120 feet long, will be located in the area east of the present guard house, and adjacent to the mobile depot groups. The building will be the theatre of operations type. In the past men doing guard duty have had no definite place to stay in the "off" hours. Empty barracks or any available building have been utilized. Included in the building will be an office for the officer and corporal of the guards. The new structure will greatly centralize the procedure as well as add to the comfort of the men doing guard duty. The building will not be used for the confinement of prisoners, ac cording to present plans. J tub CRACK OUTFIT . , . After several weeks spent on bivouac and months of training at the field, the 906th Signal Company Depot Aviation was recently inspected by Colonel Frederick D. Lynch, base commanding officer, and members of his staff. The results were pronounced good. Service Men Gain Greatly in Provisions of New Tax Law Passage of the new income bill toy congress last week will prove a boon to harrassed service men who have been worrying about (heir tax liabilities. While not a straight 100 per cent forgiveness plan of the original Ruml variety, enough forgiveness remains to provide a windfall to men in the armed forces. Basically, the plan provides for a 75 per cent forgiveness of the 1942 or 1943 tax whichever is lower. Salient points in the new tax bill as it affects service men are : outlined below. 1. For military personnel all taxes on 1942 earned income up to $14,000 is cancelled. Earned income, for tax law purposes is, in general, wage and salary income. Income in the form of interest' from bonds and dividend payments is held to be "unearned," and this income is taxable. Thus, if a present member of the armed forces earned $10,000 in salary in 1942 and received $4000 in the form of interest from bond or stock holding, he pays tax only on the $4000, less his exemptions and deductions. 2. Military income earned during 1943 is taxable. This is not as tough as it sounds, for the following tax-- f I- Are to Be Built r Plans Prepared Officer Mess Is To Be Enlarged 60 the source each pay day and per cent of the 1942 tax due is for given, with 25 per cent to be paid over a period of years. But if it be the case that the tax in this fashion is lower than the 1942 tax liability due for payment (instead of higher) it will be considered ' that 75 per cent of 1943 tax is cent 25 per forgiven; the remaining will have to be paid by 1945, while the 1942 tax will have to be paid this year by means of the quarterly payment system. The reason for this is that the law provides forgiveness for the lower tax of the two years. It must be admitted that the problems of tax payment in this section will worry only a relatively small number of men, not the large majority of military person 75 Per Cent More ' Space Will Be Added to Quarters To take care of increased officer personnel on the post, construction of an addition to the present Officers Mess will begin soon. Activities of the OASC headquarters increased the number of officers assigned to the field. Another headquarters had to be staffed, in addition to base headquarters. Hundreds of officers were assigned to the field to take up new duties, and many are still coming in. The first place to feel the pains of growth was the Officers Mess. Then too, Hill Field is one of the key units in the Army Aerial Traffic, and many transient flying officers are quartered in the BOQ and are fed at the Officers Mess. The present mess was too small to accommodate the increase, and plans were drawn up by the Engineering section for the new addition. Whenever a general officer arrives at Hill Field and there is a .review, all the dogs of the post put in an appearance, and make the most of the occasion. As the dog population has grown, - so has tiie problem. It reached major proportions on the occasion of Major General Frank's visit. With eight dogs happily frolic-in- g about the feet of the officers, the marching men and the band, it promised to look like an animal show. Happily, before the general arrived, officers and enlisted men of the 31st and 32nd ADO Groups, aided by men from Base Operations, went on an animal hunt and locked the various squadron mascots in a nearby latrine. ...Ml ilniil wfn n.vm - ...14-1- . . kl. jf ...:iU mm leaves ,. 1 1 ancies. : The second building, 48 feet 124 feet, will house the empi Bud! mem section, nere new applicj Vithou for jobs will be processed and bioin signea.
