The Livestock Situation LOS ANGELES UNION STOCK YARDS Improved demand for meats in Southern California is indicated at the stock yards where last week's cattle markets held fully steady, despite the fact that receipts were the largest in several months. California, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, Idaho, and New Mexico combined to make up the cat- e supply, a reflection of the wide territory from which Southern California draws its meat food supply. This is the season of the year when California cattlemen buy the bulk of the stocker and feeder cattle required each home-raised year to supplement the cattle that are fattened in the State. The movement is Betting un der way as California cattlemen are for the most part enjoying excellent range feed conditions. On most of the ranges, feed is made up of dry grass at this time of the year, but there areimportant cattle sections along the rich coast ranges where cattle are now on green feed. In these sections it is one of the earlies green feed seasons on record. Due to the intense competition from middle-wester- n farmers who this fall have an abundance of grain and forage, southwestern cattle producers have had benefit of a two-wa- y demand. However, it is believed that when the season has come to a close, it will be found that California will absorb about the usual 85 to 90 per cent of Arizona's stocker and feeder shipments. Cattle graziers are giving considerable study to the sort of cattle that appear to enjoy the most stable outlet. While nearly everv cat tleman would prefer the highest type steers, there are some who point out the fluctuating demand for such cattle and the relatively stame aemana tor cows and bolog na bulls. They feeel that present prices of stocker and feeder steers are erlativly high in view of the present fat cattle prices, and that there may be some inclination to half-milli- fatten a larger percentage of cows which seem to have a reliable out let, although there may be less op portunity for spectacular profits. The big consumer demand for the fancy meats and sausage in the form of bologna has resulted in a broad demand for bulls, aged bulls which seem to be the best suited for packer requirements of such The bull market has products. fluctuated to a very limited degree over a period of two or more years.
