BARHETT mm hot WORK AT Explains K1V Changes and Adjustments ' That Had Taken Place in School District In a talk in educational facilities before the Klwanis Club, Monday, Nov. 17, Superintendent O. L. Bar-ne- tt gave a brief resume of the progress and achievements of the schools of the Juab District during the past three or four years. He spoke of the varied changes and adjustments that had taken place in organization, curriculum revision, and teaching personnel. Continuing he stated that during this period the first and second grades of the district have been changed from the schedule. half -- day basis to a full-da- y This has given greater opportunity for growth and advancement, and the change was instituted without increasing the teaching personnel or financial outlay in the district. The advantages of the Nephi Junior High School have been enriched materialg ly by transferring of its department from the Nephi Central School Teachers' Room to the Homemaking Rooms of the High School building. The courses in this department, as weu as tnose in science and agriculture are now taught by instructors with high school certificate who are specially trained and experienced in their re spective fields. of the Nephi The Junior and Senior High Schools in accordance with the three-thre- e plan has placed, the ninth grade with Uie seventh and eighth grades making a standard Junior high school as re' quired by the State school author! ties. This arrangement made possi ble the elimination of one teacher from the faculty of the two schools which means a saving to of approximately $1200.00 per year. It also permitted of an enrichment of the curriculum for both th junior high schools making it possible for the junior, high schcol pupils to enroll in typewriting, commercial French, geogparhy, band or orchestra. The instituting or spring registrar tion has made possible the com mencing of regular class work on the opening day of school thus eliminating the costly waste of time and means in spending a day- - or two registering when school opens in the fall as was previously done, With the adoption of the hour period in both the junior and senior high schools of the district, a new type of cla-s- s j.rocedure was adopted which permitted of more careful supervision of the pupils' study activities and of the direction of his abilities to organize and think out problems. At the Nephi Central School the modified Platoon plan was institut ed which has resulted in more efficient scholarship. This has been Chiefly due to the departmentalization of the subject matter enabling teachers specially trained in each of the varied subjects of the curric ulum to concentrate their efforts to the particular problems of their de partment. A steady improvement has been eoinsr on in the selection of the teaching personnel of the district, and it is felt at the present time that the faculties of the Juab School District are the best that have ever All teachers are been employed. properly certificated for the work that they are now teaching. The teachers of the Junior High Schools of the district i are, in most cases. degreed people holding high school certification, and in some instances college graduates with high school certification are teaching in our elementary schools. home-makin- the-distri- -- Nephi Couple Married At Lomax Home residence of Mrs. Robert Lomax was the scene of a quiet wedding Thursday afternoon when her daughter, Bessie, became the bride of Glen Schofleld, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. "Our country has many causes for thanksgiving. We have been blessed with distinctive evidence of divine favor. we As a nation, have suffered far less than other peoples from the present world difficulties. We have been free from civil and industrial discord. The outlook for peace between nations has been strengthened. In a large view we have made progress upon the enduring structure of our institutions; the arts and sciences that enrich our lives and enlarge our control of nature have made notable advances; education has been further extended. We have made gains in the prevention of disease and in the protection of children. "Now, therefore, I, Herbert Hoover, President of the United of States America, do hereby designate November 27, 1930, as a national day of Thanksgiving and do enjoin the people of the United States so to observe ft. calling upon them to remember that many of our people are in need and suffer ing from causes beyond their con trol, and suggesting that a proper celebration of the day should include that we make sure that every person in the community, young and old, shall have cause to give thanks, .Jpr our. institutions ... and ' To Be Held Thursday States.
