A GROUP You distinguish what they are saying. Let one of them mention your name and you hear it distinctly. You are all set and ready for your name even though you are deeply Interested in other things. There is a high degree of among all the machinery involved the ear, the brain centers, and all the neutral connections. Years of practice and constant repetition have produced in you an automatic response to your name. We are all set for our own name because we are deeply interested In what concerns us personally. The mention of the name Is a signal which releases the mechanisms of interest and effort. Similarly, a mother is set for the cry of her infant. Her child is in the background of her mind at all times. This type of interest quickens the senses, by a tenseness and accommodation very much like the alertness displayed by the rabbit with cocked ears listening to a strange sound that may prove to be a danger signal. The proofreader's keenness for misprints, the railroad man's for signals from the engineer, the customs officer's remarkable knack for catching smugglers are further illustrations of seeing what we expect to see. In the newspaper game the uncanny way reporters have of getting hold of unusual news, often referred to as having a nose for it, is a still further Instance of the same sort of thing. Thus, for similar reasons though In a milder degree of efficiency, we all see what we expect to see. The Idea is In mind, the Image of the thing quickens our senses and puts ua in tune with that object. We see.it more quickly and accurately because the stage Is all s for that very purpose. Chappell. announces that ground has been broken for Nephl's egg grading plant. The officers of the Nephi Poultrymen, Incorporated, are to be congratulated for their determination and push, for it has taken a lot of hard work and energy to get this plant under way. The business men of this city who gave their assistance to the poultrymen and who furnished the necessary security for the borrowing of a portion of the money to construct the building certainly have the Interests of the poultrymen at heart, and It is hoped that the new industry will bring a new era of prosperity to this city. It is certain that the grading plant will employ five or more people, and that alone will bring money into our community, as heretofore the eggs have been hauled to Payson, and we have been assisting in building up that community. In addition to the Nephi eggs, it is reported that eggs from Millard county will be brought here for candling, which should also bring some business from the Southern towns. "More new business is what we need and not so much talk of depression," says R. H. Ballard, president of the Southern California Edison company. "Spend the money for new business campaigns and new advertising, and the results will be surprising. The people have the money and will buy the goods, I believe, if somebody has the courage to sell them the buying idea." He pointed to increases in savings deposits, gains in new life insurance in force and increased buying of bonds as evidence of the ability of consumers to buy goods if they so desire. Affected, however, by the pessimistic drift of national comment, the public is reluctant to buy and consequently Is building up a tremendous backlog of purchasing power. This backlog should and can be tapped, declared Mr. Ballard,' if American business men snap out of an apathetic state of mind and employ redoubled efforts to produce new business. This is not the time, is his opinion, to lay off salesmen and cut advertising appropriations.
