Show THE Friday, August 24th. 1928. J. flock of 50 Hamsphire sheep, yearling' ewes and rams and ewe lambs were purchased by J. C. Penney, founder of the J. C. Penney Co., and nationally known pure bred live stock breeder, for importation into this country, during the Royal live stock show which recently closed at Nottingham, England. The sheep were from the flock owned by Major Jervois, of Basingstoke, England, one of the leading breeders of sheep in Great Britian. Mr. Penney is known as the owner of Commanded, the leading Hampshire ram of this country. He Is also the owner of the herd of Foremost Guernsey cattle at Emmadine Farms, Hopewell Junction, N. Y., one of the leading herds of pure bred Guernsey cattle in this country. Mr. Penney reports the Royal live stock show and fair, which was held at Nottingham, this year, as a particularly complete exhibit of live stock, farm products and farm machinery. He says, "I was fortunate enough to be. there on the day that King George and Queen Mary were pres ent and saw the special parade of prize winning stock which was held in front of the huge amphitheatre. Most of the cattle were beef stock and the major portion of the sheep were the mutton variety rather than the wool bearing types. It was an Inspiring sight. Eng land has gone into pure bred live stock on a large scale. In uniformity of type, achieved by consistent breed' ing along well denned lines, they have gone farther than we have In this country. Breeding has been carried on for generations by the same families on the same farms, a thing which has not been achieved in this country as yet. "In other qualifications however I feel that we have achieved results fully equal to anything I saw in A This alert organization again takes leadership in providing the finest and most varied assortment of fresh fruits and vegetables. A novel feature of the live stock judging in England is the fact that all judging and awarding of prizes is done on the first day of the fair. 'according to Mr. Penney.
