Be Sure it Speaks the Language of Man's Size Value are now obtaining liquor situation. In spit of my lack of sympathy I am certainly going to make public my private opinion of bootleggers. As far as I care, people who are "free white and twenty-one- " may drink themselves to death, and the sooner the better, because they have elected to do so with full knowledge of what they are up against. I figure such a person should have his own free agency in the matter and if that is his choice, let him hop to it. He will do it anyway. The bootlegger is welcome to poison him any time, so far as I care. But when it comes to supplying boys of ten to twenty years of age it is going too with bootleg rot-gu- t, far. Nobody but a rat of the lowest order would do it. A boy that age requires the most careful study, consideration and mind training, instead of being allowed to follow the lines of ed nr.t least resistance and evn drunker;''-'';'- ' &ua by a .jV in human form who will sup ply him with poison "hootch." I refuse to insult the name of "liquor" by calling the brand of stuff peddled, by that name, and I refuse to insult mankind by referring to this kind of bootlegger as a man, also. He isn't. Whether we want to believe it or not. it is a fact nevertheless, that upon the average small town street, our own streets included, any time after thev should be in bed, bovs of ten and twelve years up to twenty may be found making a lot of racket, both drunk and sober, the former predominant. And. harder yet to sav. the bovs fire not alone, as often they have rotnnanions of the opposite sex in the same condition. What are our officers doing? w Hik. Our officers are trying to do their duty and "eet along" with us. too. We nut officers In their positions to check Just such conditions and as p.oon as he makes an attempt to do so. and he happens to put a hand on OI7R boy, what happens? Just this: We immediately start making him out a liar and trying to prove that he fs merely "after" our boy because of some personal grudge, or some other ' silly idea. In other words, we order him to do a thing and in the same breath forbid his doing it. Now what is an officer to do? Not one of us would support him if he happened to catch OUR own boy doing wrong. Not many of us would appear as a ' , witness against this thing that peddled him his "hootch" because we. ourselves, are not honest enough and lark the guts, if you please. We are all quite ready to believe that it is "association" that Is to blame for OUR boys' As long as we all believe that. It stands to reason that we. ourselves, have a certain amount of responsibilas we do ity In the matter, everything we can to defeat the purpose of he who really is trying to remedy the situation and has the abe ility to do so, with a little help. It or not, take steps to remedy it or not, as we will, things are going to get no better until we take this responsibility upon ourselves and at The first thing to do is to take make an effort toward a change, termined steps, a can of vermin exterminator, and go after the minor's bootlegger and stick after him until get off and stay off, throw them off. ho Is put where he belongs.
