(Continued on page 4) Sid-we- s 1 The snow cover on the water sheds indicate generally that the promise of water with which to irrigate for Unless the year is below normal. the weather turns hot there will be no high water this year, only little floods caused by the early runoff from the hills of the lower elevation. The indication is that water for irrigation will be short early in Midsummer and especially towards the end of the summer. It has been preached by the Irrigation Department and by Professor Winsor as he traveled through the state that high water can be used early In the spring and give beneficial results. Last year a demonstration was attempted in Carbon County. A field of alfalfa was divided into two parts and one part was watered very heavy Just after the snow had melted on the field; the other part received three irrigations at regular intervals thro.. The first part ughout the season. received no other irrigation except the early watering. At the end of th year the alfalfa produced was said to be more on the area that received but the one early irrigation, which seemed to be stored within the soil sufficient to last the entire year. It is possible to store water in many places, in the ground by applying the water early in the season in sufficient quantities to last throughout the entire year. With the prospects of water this summer for irrigation the canals should be full of water at this time of the year and should be applied especially to the alfalfa and other lands as they may need it. Last year there was severe loss because of the dryness of the soil and the seeds did not germinate. If the soil had been filled with water in the early part of the season this would not have happened. The Utah Experiment Station recommends to every irrigation district and to every farmer that they get water into the canals as soon as possible and begin to pour the water into the high lands of the system especially on the alfalfa, in Rich, Cache Box Elder, Davis, Salt Lake, Utah, Juab, Sanpete, Sevier, Carbon, Em- ery, Duchesne, and Uintah counties. If this is done at this time there will be sufficient water for other crops later in the season in case of a short supply and indications are there will be a real shortage. Devotional exercises ' were held Wednesday morning in the auditor ium. The B. Y. U. Dramatic club members gave the followinr nroarram in a pleasing and interesting manner: Remarks by A. FIRST BALL GAME NEXT WEDNESDAY Local Team Will Cross Bats With Eureka Good Game Is Promised For The Opener Team From West Side Now Member of League. The base ball season will open here next Wednesday at the local ball park, whan President Neilson will turn the big guns on the aggregation from Eureka. In view of the fact that the latter town is now a member of the Utah Central League, having taken the place of Lehl, the game next week will have added interest. Much activity has been shown of late in the mining metropolis along base ball lines, and It is expected that a good team will be sent out by the miners. A few years ago Eureka had one of the best teams in the State, but Interest in the national game waned, due in a large part to the late war. The revival of the sport is hailed with satisfaction by the local ball players as It has long been felt that Eureka should be represented in the Central League. The local line. .up for the game next Wednesday will probably consist of the following players: 1st base, Paul Grace; 2nd base, Melvin McPherson; short.. stop, Rodger Lunt 3rd base, Rulon Cowan; outfield, Bryan Petty, I.
