The dry years, like 1915, 1919 emphasize to irrigators the advantages of water accounting .accord ing to Professor O. VV. Israelson of the Utah Agricultural Experiment Station. Similarly, the years of financial depression and of low prices for farm products increase the need of careful cost accounting. Nearly knows just every farmer where each dollar goes and precisely what returns it brings to him. But does every irrigator know what beof the watei comes of each acre-fowhich he has at his disposal and that it will bring to him the maximum crop returns? Unfortunately, he does not. The irrigator who applies wat er to open porus soils frequently loses excesive amounts by deep percolation which he cannot see . Knowing, however, that his gravelly soil cannot retain in the form of soil moist-tur- e available to plants more than 2 of water per acre, the irrigator will not apply more than this amount in a single irrigation, provided, of course, he measures his water and hence knows how much he does apply. On the other hand, the irrigator who applies water to the more compact soils loses excessively by surface run-ofbut unless he measures his loss he seldom appreciates how serious it really is. The many losses brought about by the occasional dry year, which, very properly, wc would all like so much to may be of some value .provided they drive us to the practice of more careful water accounting, which clearly we can reach only by more carefully measuring the water which we 1924 A young artist unversed in financial matters returned home from a business trip to find his mother had invested her savings in a promotion enterprise which offered a very tempting 'J per cent. now-a-da- "It's no good." he said.
